Collector's Clubs...

I was seriously thinking about starting a club here in Indy for sports card collectors. I'm pretty sure I could make it happen and have a venue for it to happen. I'd like to create something where people could come trade, chat, buy/sell their cards, and just have a great time.
Has anyone done this before on these boards? If so, how did you make it happen and did you charge anything to be a part of the club? Such as a small entrance fee to help pay for the room?
Also, if there were anything like this in your town would you try to be a part of it? Thanks!

  • I was part of something like this about 13 years ago except it was for Magic the Gathering. We would all show up to a local shop and pay a weekly fee. We would hang out, chat, trade etc and then play a short tournament at the end. The $ split and went toward a weekly tournament prize and the shop owner.

    No.

BUT, if somebody advertises for participants in a buying/selling venue, I will
    pay money to play.

    Start a monthly "card show" OR "collectible show" at the Holiday Inn or Motel 6;
they have meeting rooms cheap. Charge the vendors a fee, and let buyers
in free. Advertise on Craig's List, MySpace, WalMart Classifieds, little papers
    and radio stations.

It takes a while to get going, but you could break even by the third show.

a good way to start this might be to get a table at a local show , if there any left, then put out postings in local sports section, and message boards like this.although i live in new jersey, if a event was to be strated here i would try it out.
getting a room might get a little more expensive, try a elks lodge or knight of columbus vfw etc., get a off peak time and get it a little cheaper, find a local member to one of these clubs to get a discounted hall rental.
you migth end up sitting alone until word was spread. i feel you would have to get some local mailing lists to advertise,
start very small, table a t mall show???

if you are like me i will try to get together will many fans, not just folks rummaging though a card show

I'm in the Indy area too (far Northside) and I'm not aware of anything. Not sure if I'd be able to put much time into a 'club' but it would
be nice if it was at least an option. Ever since my favorite shop shut down - The Collector's Friend - it's been hard to find much motivation.
There are shows at the Holiday Inn on the East side twice a month... small shows, but an easy 'fix' for that itch.

ALWAYS Looking for Chris Sabo cards!

The room part isn't a problem. I work at a very large church (6,000 members) and rooms are cheap for staff.
  • They have a ton of them...

  • I'm assuming that's a question. There are a lot of rooms in the building. 2 really large ones. The Great Hall can hold about 40-50 8 foot tables around the room. The fellowship hall can hold about 30 tables going around the room.
