2009 Coin book and the future

Browsing the DVD and doing some simple copy and paste to my Excel files made me wonder.

What is there to prevent someone to copy the whole book and pasting it online, for free?

I'm no Excel expert but I know how to copy PDF to Excel and then to HTML. Making it searchable and more user friendly then a PDF.

I know Numismaster does this but for a fee. While I would never do it does this mean some other scum will and kill the Coin Book industry.

It's copy write protected - Krause would no doubt sue their pants off - I would!

When sued, I'm sure the would-be publishers could never pony up the needed mountain of
research data to prove they came up with the figures themselves.

PS - Numismaster - is Krause

It's been done already. Not the current volume, but one of the 1800-1900 books. I forget where I saw it, but I'm sure it was on one of the public bit torrent sites.

Just checked and it's still there. I won't post the link though. I do a lot of bit torrent downloading, but I do not support copyright infringement.

If you told Krause about it I bet it wouldn't be up for long.

Kurt - I love the Polish coin you have as an avatar.

Been passively looking for a nice example for years.

    Ya, what JoesMaName said.

Someone could do that, but by the time it became a well known resource, I think if would be shutdown. Someone would question the source of information and a Krause lawyer would be on it. Plus, I think it would be a huge undertaking. I don't know how the DVD is layed out, but the world coin catalog is a huge book. That would be a lot of cutting and pasting. Then you would have to organize it all into a database and build a site around it. Then you'd need to monetize the site somehow because of the cost of bandwidth for a database that large. The rewards vs. risk would be too great for anyone that can manage a website of that magnitude. IMO...

I'm sure the DVD is out on a newsgroup or torrent right now. I'd rather have the book though

These public bit torrent sites (pirate bay for example) are very hard to shut down. They are usually in foreign countries that don't really care about copyright issues. The recording industry has been in court with them for years and occasionally they get shut down for a while. but they always pop back up.

Joe- I've had a thing with these coins for a long time. I think everyone has a coin that just does something for them. The obverse strike always seems a little weak to me, but I'm always looking for one with that extra "pop" to it.

I've been looking for a nice one ever since I picked up my worn example.

Beautiful profile and design in general.
It has non of the Barber-esq. classical nose job nonsense that so many engravers saddled their representations of liberty, or the female spirit of their country - with.

Hmmm.... I see a contradiction in that statement.image
