Help with ID...

I have a could of coins that I can't identify and I was hoping you all could help me. I'm pretty sure that these are foreign coins (which is why I posted them here). I would appreciate it if someone could give me their opinions on what the coins is, it's grade, and it's approximate value.

I'm not even sure which is the obverse and which is the reverse on these, so I'll just post them as Side A & Side B

I have two of these coins and this is the better sample:

Thank you for any and all help!!

    I'll give it a shot...

Coin 1 looks like a Mexico 1 real from the Zacatecas mint (KM83.3).
Coin 2 looks like a Mexico 1/2 real from the Zacatecas mint (KM370.11).

BTW- the picture of coin 1/side B is upside down. image

Based on the ids listed above, coin 1 is probably only worth its melt value due to the hole (patched?). VG examples of the type catalog for $5 to $15, and that would be a generous grade for the coin, even without the hole. Coin 2 might grade F, and depending on the date (yours appears to possibly be 1847), the values range from $5-$7 (most dates, including 1847) to $10-$40 (about a half dozen different dates).

Thanks for your input everyone... I guess they're not "worth" much...but still cool and a lot of history.

  • Don't trust the Krause prices when it comes to these old Spanish-Colonial and early Mexico silver coins. You're right to
say they're historical and for that reason, this type of stuff often sells for more than Krause listings. Not in the $50-$100
range or anything like that, but don't let anybody offer you melt!

Not that Krause prices are the Final Word or anything, but how much over melt would *you* pay for a holed, undated coin that probably grades AG at best (without the damage)? image

FWIW, the opinion of the guy who operates the "Mexican Coin Magic" website (and who appears to have done considerable research regarding the prices that Mexican coins have sold for) is that as a general rule, Krause overvalues the common items and undervalues the scarcer ones.
  • all i'm sayin' is... sell your worn out early 1950's roosevelt dimes for melt, not your 1809-25 spanish colonial silver coins struck at the zacatecas mint!

Fair enough. I'm curious, though- how much would *you* be willing to pay for a dateless AG Zacatecas real with a hole in it?
