I'm sure it's a nod to 'Deep Blue Sea', a movie in which Samuel L. Jackson (and others) end up in a life-or-death battle against genetically modified, hyper-intelligent sharks in a research station that's located miles beneath the surface of the ocean. And no, I'm not making up this plot line. Jackson gets devoured by one of the sharks 2/3 of the way through the film.
