Feel good story thanks to a board member

Barfvader's thread about a free gift from a board member inspired me to throw this one in. I have been trying for years to get my son more interested in cards and baseball history. A recent live rip by nam (Nick) paved the way for me. He sent me three Dale Murphy cards from the rip, 82 Topps, 83 Donruss and 84 Fleer. However, he sent the envelope addressed to my son, who BTW just made the Little League All Star team for 9-10 yr olds, only 9 yr old on team. My son opened them before I got home from work and was full of questions about why he got those cards and who was Dale Murphy. This gave me the chance to explain how I idolized Murphy when I was my sons age and how good of a human being the guy is.

Since then, my son has sat and looked through my collection with me twice and asked questions about players. We have also sat and watched 4 or 5 games together on TV. He is a pitcher and I have told him he needs to watch Greg Maddux pitch because of his mechanics. Now, he watches the scroll at the bottom on ESPN almost every day to see if Maddux is pitching and we actually got to watch him together against the Cubs Tues or Wed night. Helps that Maddux only gave up one run in 7 innings and only threw 69 pitches.

So, I just wanted to send a big thanks to Nick for 3 cards that are worthless by eBay standards but have become priceless in my house.

    Hey there LSU

PM me your address and sons name. I have a few autographs I have been trying to figure out a way to give away but I have not come up with a good idea until I read your post. I have about 20+ 8 X 10 signature rookies autographed photos from the 90's with most of these players making more than a "cup of coffee" appearance in the big leagues. These come with the coe's from Signature Rookies and I would like your son to have them if you would allow me to send them to him.

    Please let me know

    Thank you,
    Andrew

Edited to add my email address if this would be more convenient andy.white63@gmail.com

You're very welcome Bill, and I'm glad that they have helped a little with the solid baseball foundation that I'm sure Hunter gets from you.

Very nice post, thank you very much for posting it. Very nice of Nick and that extra touch of addressing the envelope to Bill's son, that is simply awesome!!!!

I'm going through difficult times right now being injured from work and now dealing with a very tragic death of my wife's 34 year old cousin this weekend. I had to tell my 9 yr old niece last night, I can't bring her Godfather back.

So thanks to everyone for the positive posts on this board and keep it up!

    Sincerely,
    Brian

Please send me your son's name address or yours.
I'm sure I have a bunch of cards I could spare to make a 9 year old happy.

Dale Murphy was always a class act. A Hall of Famer in my book.
Collecting PSA graded Steve Young, Marcus Allen, Bret Saberhagen and 1980s Topps Cards.
Raw: Tony Gonzalez (low #'d cards, and especially 1/1's) and Steve Young.

  • Dale Murphy was the player I idolized in the 80's 90's. A truly nice guy, class act and for about 10 years on of the best players in all of baseball. glad to see it inspired some time with your son and rekindle the memories of your youth.

    A really great story.

I'm not sure about others on here but the transactions (ones involving funds and freebies) that I have done on here just seem to be more personal and mean more than buying stuff off of eBay. I would have no problem selling something I get off eBay but the items I have received from the wonderful and generous people on here I truly won't part with them.

And my son (he's 6 going on 16) loves to get in my room. Keeps saying how he's going to open the cars and play with them someday and loves to look at the sports cards as well. Hopefully I can pass on my love of collecting to him and show him that value isn't everything because once you get over the value aspect the collecting is so much more enjoyable.

    good stuff.

i hated dale murphy personally as a kid, prolly moreso b/c my family made me watch lame braves games during suppertime in the 80s.

the braves sucked so bad that i personally grew to hate them.

    but i regress.

    +1 nick
