ON HOLD 1818 Bust Quarter, Browning-8, Rarity-3. An appealing example with Fine+ detail and nice color, but the entire coin has been very lightly cleaned, perhaps with baking soda. There is faint scuffing and hairlining throughout the fields. I bought this from a reputable (and favorite) dealer who did not notice the cleaning, or at least did not mention it. In other words, it isn't harshly whizzed. But it is a cleaned coin that won't slab. I see that Dick Osburn is offering a lightly cleaned F15 of the same variety for $195, so that should help price this one.

ON HOLD 1836 Bust Quarter, Browning-1 A pleasing VF coin that has its original gray color, marred only by a light rim bump at 11:00 on the obverse, another very small bump at 12:00, and a tiny pock mark on the eagle's neck. A later die state with extensive obverse cracks. Not a rare variety, but an interesting coin for sure, with a pleasing original look. These are bound to become popular when the new reference books on Bust Quarters hit the market.

ON HOLD 1837 Bust Quarter, Browning-4, R3 An example of a better 1837 die variety that was considered R6 just a few years ago. Now downgraded all the way to R3. It is amazing how little interest there is in Bust quarter die varieties, compared to the much more common and well-studied half dollars. That situation will not last long, as these are cool and undervalued coins. This one is in the VF+ range for detail, and it has a pleasing, lighter-than-average, antique-silver look to it. A few darker toning spots decorate the reverse. There is a toned-over hairline scratch running from just left of Liberty's ear down to the Bust. It's not something that jumps out at you, but I bet this coin will be returned as "scratched" if you send it to PCGS. Overall, a pleasing looking, slightly scarcer variety of a scarce and underrated date in the series nonetheless.
