Nice, way to go Winfield. (Who had perhaps the largest smile in the major leagues).
Collecting PSA graded Steve Young, Marcus Allen, Bret Saberhagen and 1980s Topps Cards.
Raw: Tony Gonzalez (low #'d cards, and especially 1/1's) and Steve Young.

I read it earlier this morning. It's always nice to start the day with a positive story. Great post!

Good to hear Winfield has come a long way from his days at Minnesota where he took part in one of the most violent, classless brawls in team sports history, college or professional......the mauling of several members of the Ohio State basketball team in 1972.

Hey, he erased that stigma with his outstanding performance to help the Blue Jays win the World Series in the early '90s.

I know, but as a Red Sox fan, I can still revel in his poor October Yankee performances image

Great story. Winfield is like Dale Murphy, they dont get enough credit for what they did in their playing days.

Dave Winfield was an amazing athlete and could have had a great pro career in most any sport he wanted. Sounds like he is a great guy also.

  • Few remember Winfield for his role in the Ohio State/Minnesota basketball brawl ....

Ohio State was leading Minnesota 50-44 with 36 seconds left and was in a position to take over first place in the Big Ten. Buckeye center Luke Witte is fouled hard while driving for a layup. As he's lying on the floor, Minnesota's Corky Taylor punches Witte in the head and then knees him in the groin. Gophers player Ron Behagen charged off the bench, kicked Witte in the head and stomped him unconscious. Minnesota players and fans, including several members of the football team, cornered Ohio State forward Mark Wagar and beat him. One of the Gophers basketball players was future baseball Hall of Famer Dave Winfield. This fight made the Pistons/Pacers fight look like school girls pulling each others' hair. This was a bloody, violent beating and the brawl went on for a long time.

    Youtube rules....

Looks like Taylor pulled the old "Here, let me help you up" followed by a knee to the coknballs. Classy.
