1940 PROOF SET QUESTION

Rooster1Rooster1 Posts: 381 ✭✭✭
Please view these pictures of my 1940 proof set and let me know if you
think these coins are worthwhile to send in for grading. Also, on the penny,
what color would it be? Sorry the pics are not very good.

I would definitely recommend sending them in. It looks like a very nice set.

    The cent is Red.

Sending them in for grading is up to you. I would send them IMO.

Honestly I would leave it as is, they are nice coins, but being an original set in an original holder is cooler than any numerical grade IMO.

I agree, it would be a pity to break up that set. Awesome looking coins.

    Very Nice. Thanks for sharing.

The cent is 100% red. Sending them in is your preference.

with the coins photographed at an angle and the light cranked up it's really difficult to make an accurate assessment. also, they look like they were re-packaged from the original cello into polybags which the Mint didn't start to use on their box sets until sometime in 1954, but that's a good thing since the brittle cello was bad for the coins. judging from the pictures as they are of the Cent, Nickel, Dime and Quarter i would expect that they'd grade PR65-66 at best. the Half-Dollar looks to have the best potential, but the pictures make it impossible to discern hairlines and the depth/quality of the mirrors on any of the coins. my hunch is that they probably don't look as good in hand as in these not so accurate pictures.

the best thing might be to just get a nice Capital Plastic holder.
  • Your picks are great enough.
    That penny is red.
Leave this set as is....is my opinion.

I don't think proof mercs are eligible for the FB designation.

Looks like a RED cent to me from those pics.

I would leave it as is 'cuz the coolness factor of an original set is off the charts.

Or, put 'em in a multi-holder so they can be together, if you just have to have them graded and entombed.

Since they haven't turned in their plastic in 68 years (ex. the Nickel), I don't think they would start turning now unless you move them into an unstable environment.

i certainly don't mean to be critical of the OP's Set, but the notion that this "set" has been together since it came from the Mint is a bit of a stretch. believe what you want to believe, but the set as pictured has been re-packaged and there's every likelihood that it was pieced together and not original at all.

certainly that doesn't detract from it's beaty and collectibility, but some of our members need to cease with their fairy-tales!!image
  • If interested in selling let me know. My dad was born in 1940 and that would make a great set.

no, Wes, not a slammer. i just think it's irresponsible to give bad information or to make wrong claims, especially with a newcomer who's looking for help. i realize that's it's often a case of exuberance, but it's probably better to keep quiet than to mislead. now if you'd like to do things via the PM function we can get down and dirty, but i think that's a bit childish even for this place.

Beautiful set, I would have them graded.
    Might get some pleasant surprises
  • Please leave that set exactly as it is! I am working on a collection of proof sets in their original mint packaging, and that's one I still need.

I'm not sure this is how they came from the mint. Thus, they are not an "original" set.

From a financial perspective, you should have them certified. But only if that is your ultimate concern.

Keets, this set was purchased as an unopened, original box. This is how they came. The box was unopened.

That is not an original mint packaged set. The coins may be cool or cleaned. K
  • segojasegoja Posts: 6,141 ✭✭✭✭
IF that was purchased as an unopened box, then someone was taken.

If that's the case, then i can tell you the coins are not worth grading.

Anyone who woud repackge a set, does not repack outstanding coins.

In any case it looks like an above avg set in aftermarket plastic.

like these guys said, thats in no way original packaging.

If I have the time tomorrow I will get some original sets outta the SDB, and show you what original is.

regardless of that, those are some nice coins.
