Red Sox Fans: What do you think of Dave O'Brien (radio announcer)

Frankly, I don't think he is that great. He is an adequate announcer, but seems to me to lack personality and everything he says sounds canned. I was disappointed when they dumped Jerry Trubiano, and don't know why ownership thinks O'Brien is so much better. Besides, O'Brien has missed about a third of the brocasts to do TV on ESPN. Red Sox radio play-by=play announcers should be dedicated to the Red Sox. Heck, I would prefer if they had O'Brien's fill in (Dale Arnold) full time, and dump the part time carpetbagger O'Brien.

Trupiano was horrendous IMO, and I always got the sense towards the end that him and Castiglione didn't really get along... a lot of their exchanges seemed forced, and there were a lot of times when Trup would make a joke or comment and Castiglione wouldn't even acknowledge it, making it very awkward on-air.

O'Brien is a national guy that knows his stuff (that's why it sounds canned and lacks personality - he's been trained not to sound like a homer, like all national announcers). It's tough because the way they divide the broadcast, they have to be both play-by-play guys and analysts. If they had Castiglione just do play by play and got a former player (Eck?) to do the analyst job, it might work better. I think Arnold has done a good job....I think it would be great if Meterparel eventually got the gig.
  • I've heard him quite a bit on ESPN, and compared to the douche bags they have doing games, he's
probably one of the better ones. Sutcliffe's stuttering just drives me whacky. I really liked Gary
Thorne, he's the best hockey guy around and does great baseball too. What happened to him?
