1917 Doubled Die Obverse auction; is this price an outlier or the new going rate?

seanqseanq Posts: 8,735 ✭✭✭✭✭
1917 DDO cent in ANACS Fine-12 sells for $710, with three different bidders in for over $600.

These don't sell often enough for me to have a great feel for the market, but that seems very, very high. Last year you could have had a nice XF for that bid; 18 months ago you could have had the PCGS VG-10 I sold on eBay for less than $150. The PCGS price guide still shows a Fine-12 for $190.

With all that in mind I'm inclined to call the auction an outlier... but then again, with three people in over $600 I have to wonder if there isn't more to the increase. Anyone who deals in Lincoln varieties have any opinions on the auction or values in general?

    Hey Sean,
    How are you buddy?
    Wow.
I would also have called it an anomaly, but I have a sneaky feeling that Lincoln varieties
in general will continue to increase as the series continues its popularity. People want a RedBook set.
The real biggie DDO's are practically impossible, but the nice DDO's, the 17,36,41,55,72 etc will continue to increase in
    my opinion.
Fun time to be a Lincoln collector.

Wow- I sold a certified VG-8 on eBay a couple of years ago for $70... seems WAY high to me, too.

I want to see what either of the two MS67 1917DDO Cents would auction for.

That's crazy. The 1917 DDO cent is NOT that tough of a coin in low to mid range grades. I've cherried over 25 in Good to Fine condition.

The asking price of this cent in the XF and up grades is in the thousands. While mostly lowered graded examples exist, there is an imbalance in grades. You would think the coin would be easy to cherry in higher grades as one could see the doubling easier, but frankly it is not and the worn- flat- wide- characteristics of a circulated specimen almost make the coin stand out in lower grades for easy discovery. But with that aid, No way is it worth (now) $700, $3-$400 for an Ebay or Telerade auction is about right, UNLESS, it’s a good ole Tickling contest between bidders?

It's because Homer and Bart Simpson were looking for a 1917 penny with the double Lincoln kissing himself......

Seems like a lot of money for something that you pretty much need a loupe to see, rare or otherwise.

Bringing this back to point out this auction. I'm not the seller, but that was once my coin - I checked the cert number and that is the example referenced above. I purchased it raw and submitted to PCGS in June 2006, it sold that September for $202.50 (I was wrong about the $150 above). Seller states his reserve is $300, which should be a steal if the auction in my original post above is any sort of benchmark. Should be interesting to watch, anyway.

If this was a steal, I`m happy.

Really just bid this high to finally "own" one of these. image

Maybe I`m a little image though...

That hammer price ($315) seems much more in line. Congrats on winning the coin, Lee, having once owned it I know you'll like it. When it was raw I thought it had a shot at VF, though realistically I expected it to grade as a Fine-12 or 15. There's a lot of "meat" on that coin for a VG-10.

Here are some pics I took of it before I sent it in to PCGS:
