Legit 1952 Topps Mantle auction?

Hi, all

This seller has been trying to sell his 1952 Mantle on eBay for the last six weeks. Is it a legit sale? I recall his original price was $22,500 BIN or Best Offer back in late April 2008. His ad currently states he purchased it from Hunt Auctions in 2006. I checked the archives and it sold for $18,000 + 15%bp for a total of $20,700. The eBay seller has now lowered the BIN all to way to $15,850. That means a cut of nearly $5,000! Let me know what you guys think.

Don't know if it's legit, but that is one Sweeeeet looking 52 Mantle.

Man, I wish I didn't have to pay the mortage, car payment, electric bill, grocery bill and credit card bills this summer. I'd be all over that like a monkey on a cupcake. Assuming it's legit, that is.

    Those monkeys and their cupcakes.....
  • It is a great looking card. I have also been watching the card and corresponded with the Seller regarding it. One concern I have is the corner wear. I have a feeling that if you crossed it over to PSA, you may get a 4.5 or 5 on it. I think the 4.5 is more likely. The eye appeal is what I like about it. Regarding the price, I think it is fair. It is not a bargain price. If he did buy it at Hunt, then he overpaid and is paying the price.

I would say legit - look at the feedback as a buyer - that seller isn't afraid to spend a few dollars.

  • The current sale price seems reasonable but it just seems very unusual for someone to take a $5,000 loss on a 1952 Mantle. The seller has perfect feedback but this could possibly be his/her last card for "sale".

Send the seller this note: Dear Seller, you have sold thousands of dollars recently. Please use $100 from your sales and get a scanner.

    Just kiddingimage
  • I agree regarding the loss. It makes me question the auction. It isn't like he is hard pressed for the money. I know of some offers that were very strong. I think this is something that I would need to pick up in person to inspect the holder and card.

I am guessing he upgraded his Mantle and is just looking to move this one. He probably knows he overpaid.

A plane ticket to anywhere in the U.S. will run you a couple of hundred dollars. Is that not worth it to purchase and/or inspect a potential $15,000.00 card? In other words, if you can afford to drop 15 large on a card, then you can afford a plane ticket to inspect the card. And if the seller won't agree to meeting up, then that alone should tell you that something is fishy.

He must be in desperate need for cash. To lose 7 grand on a '52 Mantle that he bought less than two years ago is brutal.
  • Update: The card sold for a cool $15,720. That means the seller took a loss of $5,000 (closer to $6,000 if you include listing fees and PayPal fees) for a 1952 Mantle he owned for less than two years! Very puzzling...
