Does anyone have the 2009 Krause Catalog yet?

I was just wondering what is on the DVD included with this new edition:

Really? Wow, that would be worth it then. It sucks to have to lug out the thick book every time you want to bid on something. I hope it's in PDF format.

The book/DVD will be coming out next month alongside the 21st Century, and I believe that it will have a DVD in it too.

FYI, last time i ordered one of these, the best price I could find was Wal-Mart online. Also free shipping (or nearly free) from what i recall.

Checked there - what Wally World is selling is the outgoing edition (2008). And it seems that it is the only world coin book that they're selling. Amazon.com has what's called "Free Super Saver" shipping on eligible items. I chose that option, as I am not in a big hurry to get the book. And the 21st Century book is coming out sometime next month, and it too will come with a DVD. I am planning to buy it and the Standard Catalog of World Paper Money, Volume 3, Modern Issues 1961-date (come with - you guessed it - a DVD.)

On Tom Michael's (of Krause) blog he mentioned that Krause will also be selling the DVD's by themselves.

As far as the 18th and 19th Century volumes - I really don't know, but if I know Krause, they may surprise us. And, from my understanding, the 17th Century book (coming out in December) will have it. I read in Tom Michael's Blog on the Krause website that there will be stand-alone DVD's (meaning you need not purchase the book.)

Has anyone used the DVD yet?
Is it accessed through a standard browser such as MS IE or FireFox?
And if so can you set book-marked favorites and jump instantly to them?
Or does it have its own application used to access its content?

The data in the DVD is in PDF form (which requires Adobe Reader, a free program)

That is good news. I was hoping it would be in PDF format. I ordered one at Amazon over the weekend. The fact that they even bothered to put it on a DVD shows Darkside is gaining in popularity.

So did I, and I will be receiving it by Saturday 6/14. Need to update my books as they're getting a bit "long in the tooth!" 21st Century is out next month, and the Standard Catalog of World Paper Money Volume 3 - Modern Issues 1961-date - is already out and that book also comes with a DVD.

Now everyone here is curious of why Krause chose DVD over CD? Its simple - a DVD holds 4.7GB (gigabytes), which is way more than a CD, which only holds up to 700MB (megabytes). For those who may not understand the conversion, 1024MB = 1GB. So, with all of the pics and info, it makes sense for Krause to go DVD.

As far as purchasing a copy of the book, Amazon.com and Books-A-Million.com are the two choices I recommend.

It is pretty dumb if the whole book is in a single PDF file. The better way to do it would be 1 PDF file per country.

Just got home twenty minutes ago to find it in
an Amazon box on my front porch. This is the
hardcopy version pre-ordered last November for $34.25.
Best price I could fine for the 20th-Century book.
Might try DVD format when the .pdf is broken down
    into more manageable pieces.
    Best to all ~

Well, I have a HP 300GB external hard drive that I bought at Circuit City last year. I think I can cram this and the other Krause DVD's in it. image

I just received the book with the DVD and transfered it to an external hard drive.

First test find Canadian 1902 cent in VF.

    On DVD : 96 seconds

    By book : 18 seconds

I need to put a shortcut to open it faster.

After reading the comments about the Krause DVD, I think the reason why some people are having better luck accessing information than others could come down to one thing - the speed of the computer processor. Ah ha! On the laptop that I use on a daily basis, it has a AMD Turion 64, while the desktop uses a AMD chip but its 4-5 years old. I should be getting my book on Saturday and hope to report my experience with the DVD.

I'm still using a '95 issue that I bought from Lord Whatshisname. I'm sure most coins have gone up at least a nickel since then.

Kind of off topic. Anyone know how Amazon.com ships books? I ordered the 2009 Krause and didn't notice until later in the day they have my old address. I really thought I had changed it. They have the correct billing address and I know they are supposed to send credit card orders to the billing address only, but my invoice has the shipping address as my old address.

If they ship by any other means than USPS I think I'm screwed. I tried to change the order to my new address but Amazon wouldn't let me.

They're sending mine USPS, so it stands to chance that you will be getting yours that way, Ajaan.

If nothing else, try canceling your order and reorder the book, not forgetting your new address.

Wow a min. and a half sounds painful...

External hard drives are very handy but not known for speed - even with USB2.0 they can be under-performers.

Have you tried moving the file to your main HD to see if there is any improvement?

Also was that speed accessing a bookmark and going directly to the desired page or did you have to search and scroll?

They shipped mine by UPS and with typical Big Brown failure they missed my apartment the first day and had to redeliver.

    Bookmarks are faster alomst instantaneous.

Second test Japan 10000 Yen yr.61

    On DVD : 15 sec
    By Book : 9 sec

There are two books on the DVD and I used the version that is cut up into small catalogs. It's faster, never use the search box unless looking for a date on the page itself.

What is odd is the small parts are protected from printing and the full book on DVD is not.

Still I like the feel of the book.

For all the money that Amazon.com makes (and this would also apply with "Flea-Bay"), one would think the dumb schmucks would have a toll-free number for customer service if you have questions and would like to get an answer from someone who actually has a pulse (and can speak English clearly). Books-A-Million (where I get some of my books from) actually has one.

  • Just took the DVD for a test drive-- it's so much easier than lugging out the book.
Just copy the entire catalog (roughly a half a gig) to the hard drive, and you have
instant access at your finger tips.

I think I'll just toss the book out or use it as a door stop, lol.

Although I don't have a newer Krause and therefore the use of the DVD, I would still probably prefer the paper copy. I guess that is partly because my computer is too slow right now, but I like paging through the book itself for no apparent reason too.

Well, I received the 2009 Krause today. It was sent DHL via the USPS. I guess what happens is the box is sent to the local PO by DHL and the PO delivers it. So, my local PO wrote on the package to deliver to my new address.

Now I have to decide what to do with my 2007 Krause . . .

The DVD was on the inside of the back cover.
