I would take the upper deck. I think even the average or passive collector knows this card and remembers trying to find it. The 89 tiffany is not as well known and would only be appreciated by someone who knows the hobby.

I'd personally want the Tiffany. MUCH, and I mean much, less saturation, and there always will be.

i think the tiffany would be the way to go, there should be much less in gradeable condition

I say get them both... the psa 9 UD Griffey is not really that expensive and it's the card that changed the hobby in the late 80's.

I say the same thing. Griffey will retire with 600 plus homeruns. So far, there haven't been any Steroid or performance drug accusations. And he missed many games from injuries several years ago which cut down his numbers.
  • I remember an article in Beckett in 1990 or '91 that said the UD Griffey would eventually be considered the '52 Mantle of this generation. With the exception of course of the extra couple million Griffeys that are out there.

I think there was 750,000 printed of UD the first year. If not it is close to that, the number is known and it is not millions. (Granted, still a lot more then there are likely collectors).
Collecting PSA graded Steve Young, Marcus Allen, Bret Saberhagen and 1980s Topps Cards.
Raw: Tony Gonzalez (low #'d cards, and especially 1/1's) and Steve Young.
  • I would go with the Tiffany only because there are less of them out there. I wonder how many '89 UD Griffeys' PSA grades every month? And that number will most likely rise in the coming years.
  • get the bowman tiffany ....surprised no one mentioned that one...it is by far the most rare, most expensive, and condition sensative due to centering issues....

    get one of these too......

Not true. 5000 ct. boxes of Griffey's were backdoored to many of the larger dealers in the country who were willing to pay for them. I think there were either 5,000 or 10,000 Topps Tiffany and Bowman Tiffany sets produced, so you're looking at around 5-10% of the production run for the tiffany's.

However, I would buy all of them if you really want Griffey RCs though. You should be able to get them all (Topps, Tiffany, Bowman, Fleer + Glossy, Score, UD) for around $150 total in PSA 9, even cheaper if you buy them raw.

you wouldn't be able to get all of those including the bowman tiffany for $150 in psa 9. The bowman tiffany will set you back that much alone, especially if centered nicely.
  • TOPPS TIFFANY (source beckett)

    1984: Red (10,000)
    1985: Blue (5,000)
    1986: Maroon (5,000)
    1987: Violet (30,000)
    1988: Green (25,000)
    1989: Blue (15,000)
    1990: Red (15,000)
1991: Navy (unknown, but believed to be the lowest print run of all, so <5,000)

ONLY 5000 of the bowman tiffany...and most griffeys are poorly centered...

I stand corrected; I didn't realize the Bowman Tiffany went for that much. Knock it down to a PSA 8 and you can still probably pick everything up for $150.

Thanks for the Tiffany print numbers. I know there was no 1983 Tiffany, was 1991 the last year?

There are a few 1989 Bowman PSA 8's on ebay right now. I know you are looking for a rc but I think the 1990 Bowman Tiffany is one of his nicest cards. It has a nice "classic" look to it
