The Heritage Auction Lots at Long Beach after everyone went to sleep......

orevilleoreville Posts: 12,160 ✭✭✭✭✭
After losing on all my other bids, I finally won a single Heritage lot.

I purchased this period 2 round Cal fractional gold $1/4 piece at Heritage Long Beach. It was one of the very last lots on Friday May 30th. Everyone went home to sleep. However, I had to fight off some strong bidding by two other bidders. The price I had to pay was quite strong, however it must be said that it is a condition rarity (type-wise) as well as a somewhat scarce piece in its own right.

1871 25C Liberty Round 25 Cents, BG-812, Low R.5, MS67 PCGS. Attributed by the open loops at the base of the ribbon. A flashy sun-gold Superb Gem with exemplary preservation. Intricately struck and completely without planchet issues. Slightly wavy, as always and as made. The single finest certified by either PCGS or NGC (4/08). No previous prices realized recorded for this item in this grade.

There are 39 of these pieces in all grades at PCGS and 3 at NGC for this 1871 BG-812. There are only 2 round $ 1/4 Cal fractional gold pieces graded in PCGS MS-67 (for the entire denomination and shape). There are 11 octagonal $ 1/4 Cal fractional gold pieces graded in PCGS MS-67 of which two has sold for between $2500 and $3500 within the last year.

Nice piece. I watched that one sell on HALive and liked it myself.
  • Nice pick-up Oreville, and some pretty strong bidding required to take that one down. A superb example!! I picked up the finest known ( of 5 examples) BG-758 in the CSNS Platinum sale in late April and ending up forking over more than anticipated. The going's getting tough

1798centcollector: You won that cool piece! I was trying to save up my $$ when I saw that piece and I saw the prices too. I seem to recall it is only one of two or three mint state pieces graded by the grading services (unusual for a period 2 piece) and was not generally saved in mint state. For that matter, it is quite rare!

  • Yes, I salivated quite a bit. It did go for more than I had hoped to pay - but you can't predict the prices on these pieces. It's often about who shows up at the table - as you know.

It is a superb piece with lots of yellow flash. Heritage called it an R8, but should be a high R7. Five in all graded by PCGS . None by NGC. Only two MS coins graded, this one at 64 and the Roe example at 63. I especially liked the design and Robert Grays "G" mintmark.

Edited to add. I really did like the BG-1016a silver trial piece in the same sale you picked-up the the BG-812, alas the reserve killed my interest, and it appears the piece did not sell. That would be one interesting piece for one to add to a collection of FG.

This post , to me, is the epitome of perfection as numismatics are concerned. The coin is nice, too.

That is gorgeous Oreville ... glad that I didn't bid you up on that one image I picked up this pop 1/0 in the Superior sale last week. Occasionally, there are some good values to be had when everyone is somewhere else ...

oreville and Fletcher - those are both great looking pieces. image

I know very little about fractional gold....it seems like an interesting area in which some nice looking rarities can be found. But they are tiny! image

I was sitting on Heritage live until after midnight central time on the darkside pieces, and wound up with a couple of excellent buys which I posted in the world forum. A Bronzed Proof 64 1799 halfpenny for $280 made it worthwhile to sit up until 1:30 watching. What the heck, I'll show it here too:

I won 8 lots in the internet-only auction on Sunday, my most ever. Five were VAM cherrypicks in PCGS-64 holders.
    When in doubt, don't.
