Fakes are concentrated in $5 Indians. 7 out of 10 not genuine.

    That has got to hurt.

That is plum scary. I do not deal in gold but how are all those not real? Are they made of real gold just made outside the mint or? I always here about fake gold just never seen it. My local dealer has a few pieces somewhere that he bought from a national dealer a few years back. He sent them in, all came back fake and the national dealer would not take them back. I have not seen them. What is the story on the not real gold.?

You can assume they will start showing up on ebay about June 7-12.

Is this something that irritates grading companies? Or are they okay with getting a submission that's almost half fake?

This is something I wonder about also. If the weight and dimensions are correct then they're real gold right?

I always verify the size & dimensions of any raw gold I buy and that gives me the density. I check it versus the "as minted" weight also of course.

What advantage would someone have conterfeiting a common date with real gold?

Not a series to buy raw on ebay.
  • adamlaneusadamlaneus Posts: 6,969 ✭✭✭
Every one of those counterfeit coins goes for a premium over melt.

Indians, even raw ones, sell for much more than melt.

$1 coins tend to sell for well over melt.

The counterfeit liberty half eagle is a 'cc' mintmark, so that should be obvious.

Also, these coins may have been produced long ago when the spread of prices between the melt value and the coin value were larger.

The whole indian thing is scary. The two[edit]three good ones were of middling quality. The rest were fake!
It will be challenging to record this pattern of fakes and look for an eBay seller with a matching set of items...

cause if they can pass them as Gems they can collect on the grade premium. This would be my guess.

Exactly. I once bought what I thought was a GEM $1 Gold piece. The weight was off by .02 but the dealer said it was probably his scale......not!! It would have graded 65+ if real. I sent it to ANACS who bagged it as counterfeit. I paid a hefty premium for the grade. Luckily I knew the dealer and he refunded my money. They make some pretty good looking fakes!

Wow, can anyone on these boards grade those coins like that if they were presented in that order? You would have to be quite skilled to grade all of those catching the counterfeit ones, yet grading the genuine ones.

Yes, that must have hurt, but think of the poor graders getting a lot like that and having to catch all the phony coins without having any false positives.

Counterfeits are usually accurate in metal content, weight and size. The concern is they are not made by the U.S. mint.

Most counterfeit gold coins are struck from dies and have their full weight of gold. The profit comes from their numismatic premium.

Calm down. The owner can donate all of them to the ANA and write off his losses as a " Gift of Deed", equal to his losses from being the victim of fraud.
The ANA can and often does, in turn, use these pieces in their education programs.

Thanks to this place and whoever told me about that when I first joined the boards. It helped minimize the loss and the pain of trusting the thief on eBay.

Wonder if he bought from one of those sleazy dealers that take out full page ads or maybe TV purchases.
