Even in this condition the seller still received over $700 for this card.

I saw that and have been watching it. I last checked it yesterday when it was at $455. I didn't realize the final bid price until just now. That's an amazing price.

People collect scrapbooks, so the final price wasn't just based on the value of the Mantle. A sports scrapbook made by a kid 50 years ago is a fairly unique item and even if the Mantle wasn't there it would've brought at least $300-$400.

If the kid went on to become a famous surgeon, this piece could skyrocket.

Well, think about it this way; whoever won that auction can say, "I own an original '52 Topps Mantle." That's gotta feel pretty good.

A cool item - no doubt about it. Not worth the money to me, but for someone it can bring back some nice childhood memories and it's certainly an entertaining conversation piece.

I can't see spending that much money either, but it is cool.
Of course lots of people would say that about all of our collections!
