Novice question about placing cards in sleeves

I placed thousands of cards in sleeves collecting as a child and you would think I would have it down to a fine art but I noticed as I was putting some of my vintage commons in sleeves that I would "nick" the second corner with the sleeve pretty often. The nick is usually harmless but on a few it took a soft corner and made it worse.
What am I doing wrong?

Try cutting a little slit in one corner of the sleeve.
About 1/2 inch will do. And welcome!

I snip the corner from my penny sleeves, about an 1/8th of an inch down the side.

The cards can slide in uninhibited.
