Would collecting US coins be as popular in the USA if the coins were not produced by the Mint and in

    Interesting question. I think not. As an example, from my understanding, the Perth Mint is kind of a subcontractor in Australia. Its coins are legal tender, but I personally don't take them as seriously as I do coins from the Royal Australian Mint. Imagine if the Franklin Mint were allowed to mint legal tender all of a sudden? Would you value those coins as much? I wouldn't. I'm not saying it's rational. It's just true.

    People collect silver and gold coins that where company minted not government minted, so I would say yes!

    In a market of collectability of "hardcore" collectors the essence is home grown.If that is lost then the meaning of collecting loses the respect that it deserves.The Mint once refined it's own metals in house instead of acquiring them from outside sources.Bullion planchets are now outsourced.....What will be next....?!?!?!.....
