Here are a couple of raw 1940-d lincoln cents. The pictures are not very good.
I would appreciate a grade opinion on them. Thanks

I have found power in the mysteries of thought.
It is always a question of knowing and seeing, and not that of believing.
Our virtues, and our failings are inseparable, like force, and matter. When they separate, man is no more.

Me too, sorry.....I used to fall for those pretty Lincolns.
I suggest you buy or view some PCGS toned Lincolns for a barometer.
Sometimes it takes an expert to discern certain coloring and toning.
I'm not one of 'em.
Many great cent guys on this forum....cohodk and ArizonaJack are two of them!!!
Good Luck to you!!!

I am not calling anyone out, I want to learn. Is there something to look for or is it a gut feeling?

Coins appear stripped of original luster. Atypical or un-natural re-toning (Bluish/Pink) around the devices. Both are tell-tale signs...

I have to agree with the growing consensus here. Again, look at many, many certified coins and talk to those "in the know." That is how we all learn what to look for.

Edit to add: It may just be the pictures, too. The last coin appears to have been circulated.
<< <i>After looking at thousands of uncirculated Lincolns, you begin to appreciate what natural color looks like. While these coins are colorful, their luster is flat. When copper retones after cleaning, you will sometimes see these colors.

Here's a beautifully 'Target Toned" 1935-D Lincoln cent from the Anaconda Website.
Good luck, there is a ton of info out there.
