I would probably avoid cleaning anything particularly valuable at all, and would avoid any polishing or dipping for the remainder. I have found that some acetone can work wonders - on higher grade coins I tend to merely submerge the coin in acetone for an hour or two and then lightly rinse, preferably with distilled water. On lower grade coins I may sometimes gently use a qtip while the coin still has acetone on the surface.
  • WOW! Nitric Acid (undiluted) eats a copper cent...very interesting......

No Bon Ami. Acetone and a Q=tip, if you absolutely MUST clean them. I have found that efforts in that region are best left alone, lest you do damage to the piece.image
  • I've got a bottle of acetone and a package of Q-tips....

Yes, but I don't think just hitting them with some Dawn or other liquid mild dish detergent with a good rinse first would be a bad idea. Loos and crappy crud can sometimes come up with surprisingly little effort this way.

My Rec: soap and water first and then go with the acetone and see what you have, and/or report back to us at this column.

  • Sounds like a good plan. I can use RO water, I have some Dawn dish detergent...How do I dry them? I don't want water spots....Should I use Jet Dry? Should I just blot them? All these tips are very helpful! Thanks much!
