    64. Strike limiting the grade imho if pics are accurate. A nice coin.

that's got to be at least a 65, if not 66.

you guys can't be serious with your '64' rating of this coin.

I would consider myself so lucky to find a coin like this at a coin show as an ms64.

    What am I overlooking?

  • I'm with you a 65 strike limiting it from a 66

For the record, I'm changing my opinion to an ms66.

the eagles breast feathers look like mush to me so that i why i think
it should not be a gem 65. other parts of the coin do not look struck
up well like hair area and above.

but for all i know this year at this mint is known for poor strikes and
    it gets a break.

64 sounds right to me. no grade inflation in this post ;-)

I have to plead ignorance of the NO mint strikes. I know they are much weaker than other mints.

To me, the eagle's breast feathers look very flat and weak, and the obverse is so flat it could be a slider.

The toning is uneven and even a little odd. I'm not sure what the color could be hiding on the obverse.

So for grading from the pictures I would just pass on even calling this MS.

No disrespect intended, just my opinion based on my very limited abilities.
The Golden Rule: Those with the gold make the rules.

I agree with what you said. Breast feathers are too weak and so it
the hair above the ear. This is very typical of Morgans minted in New
Orleans, so it doesn't detract from the grade very much, but the coin
can't be graded as high as one that is fully struck.

Therefore, I'll throw in my guess of MS64.

Wow, I do like it and look what just showed in my mailbox just now! This baby was graded in '86 as
a 64/65, but alas it has no toning! I like yours better, wanna trade? My gal is in an old IGA photo graded
soft plastic. I bought the package and not the coin as I wanted a sample of this company's "slab" from
    that era.

Thanks for the comments everyone. image I agree that the strike is fairly weak, but the technical quality is all there and I really like the extreme contrast between the toned obverse and the bright white reverse. All in all I'm very pleased with this coin and with Will's quick shipping and service. image

  • It's a very nice coin, but I just don't see it being a true 66 with the poor strike quality.
