Poll: graduation present (1/10 oz gold. 5 ruble, Peace $1)

A relative is graduating college with a degree in economics.

Which of these choices would make the best graduation present?

1/10 gold U. S. eagle
5 Ruble Csar Nicholas gold coin (his name is Nicholas)
Redfield Peace dollar, not much of coin collector, but Peace dollars are his favorite series

If this relative is like most graduating students they would say. "Show me the money!" [cash].

If given gold, the only winner might be the nearest coin shop.

  • I like the Russian gold idea- especially since his name is Nicholas- that would be a way cool gift.image

I gotta say the 08 ASE w/07 Reverse...that's a great piece to give someone graduating with an economics degree (but at this moment is quite a bit more than 1/10 oz of gold).

Still, a great object lesson...plus, the relative will either get to see the effects of feeding-frenzy supply/demand scenario that will drop like a rock after the hype, or they'll have a pretty sound investment likely to increase in value several times over.

    But only time will tell
    ASE Addict...but oh so poor!

I think the 5 Ruble Csar Nicholas gold would be a great present for your relative. Peace Dollars may be his current favorite, but maybe a gift like Russian gold would expand his collecting interests!

Is there a particular reason? There are dozens of countries that make/made gold coins, why would you pick the Philippines for an American student?

A guy from my coin club got me a 5 Rouble as a Graduation present.

It's a super cool coin and that would be my first choice; some history and it's gold!!!

    CASH!!!!

Come on, as a grad I would not have appreciated a coin like the one's mentioned nearly as much as I would have appreciated cash. Like others have said, it'll probably end up getting sold at a pawn shop/coin shop anyway. Unless you know the grad is into coins already, I'd buy a nice card and fill it with cash for sure.

Agree. As much as we love coins, most people don't care about them. Give him a Franklin and I don't mean a coin.

A flashy MS62 or MS63 silver dollar, $35 or so slabbed, makes a great gift. If the graduate is 21 or 22, you can easily find a coin dated exactly 100 before their birth year.

Give them the gold ruble. If they break down and want to sell buy the coin back from them.

After they graduate regift the coin to them as their graduation present.

I voted for the Russian gold. I think it's pretty cool.
