Coin shop loses its bank basement location and is now in a strip mall

Liberty Coins in Lansing, Michigan is no longer in the bank basement location they had been in for decades but is now in an above
ground strip mall location right across the street from the bank. The LaSalle Bank they were located in was recently bought out by
Bank of America and I suspect that is the reason for the move - either the bank raised the rent big time or they just wanted them out.
I always felt they had probably the most secure location possible for a coin shop in a bank basement at least for after hours security
concerns. Being above ground should give them much more visability but not be as secure.

Sorry to hear that. However, I think that Pat could have found another bank willing to lease them space. When I opened the Grand Rapids store for Jade in 2002, I searched many locations in the downtown area but finally settled for a space within the BankOne building (now Chase), that was adjacent to the their vault. Cameras at every corner, 24 hour surveillance, next to police station, etc. Never had a problem. However, the jewelery store right down the road was hit a few times, with the latest event resulting in the owner chasing two thieves our of his store while he was shooting at them. The shop owner was arrested for recklessly discharging a gun in public (just missed an innocent bystander by a few inches).

20 years from now, we will have "secure malls" that are designed for high-value stores (jewelery, coins, guns, banks, etc.). These locations will be protected by armed guards and other security features, such as a sign-in at a gate. I really think that something like this will happen. Crime is only going to get worse.

I thought I had read that they still were using the basement in addition to the above ground location....

If exposure brings profits and business is to survive, it is best above ground than below it.

If a business is below ground, is it part of the "underground economy"? imageimageimage

OK. If you want a prime coin shop location, try renting the first floor of US Mint HQ in Washington, DC. I think it is still available for lease.

Maybe they are using the basement for high end secure storage and the above ground for widgit display
