1964 stand-up thread

Anyone other than me collecting this series? I've reached the point in the set that only the high end cards are needed - lucky me... I'm looking for raw and/or graded NM and better to fill in or upgrade the set. Key issues for me are centering and color, so I'd also consider a strong PSA 6 / SGC 80 or ungraded, too. Please let me know what you have.

Thanks!

Very cool set. I have thought a few times about starting it but I have one too many irons in the fire already.

    I have a raw Clemente in EX-would probably grade a PSA 6.
I also have a Jack Baldschun in graded PSA 6-this card might cross over to a psa 7-Jack B is one of the hardest SP to find in a nice grade.
PM me if interested. Thanks Scott

I need Mays, Mantle ,Yaz, and Williams in PSA 7
  • PM reply sent. Send me a scan...thx.

  • Great set that has one of my favorite cards:

“Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that.” - George Carlin
  • A very interesting scan for a few reasons. I'll only address the one the catches my eye - that the SGC holdered cards look so much better than either the PSA or GAI slabs. I have a couple in SGC holders that I was thinking of crossing over and the side by side shows the wider, thicker slab with the all black surround and less distracting label (green border rather that bright red or reflective silver) really highlights the card nicely.

If I were to do this set again, but on a mid grade standard, I think I'd go w/ SGC even though I don't think the hobby accepts them as highly as it does PSA.

I think at this point you actually have that last part reversed.

Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's

  • I mean the same card in a PSA holder will draw more attention and a higher sell price than it would in an SGC holder. Perhaps this is only b/c of the registry and more the case with commons. Star player cards seem to carry interest in either holder.

And, I'm only referring the this set, not a blanket statement about acceptance of either company in the market. I believe that topic is well played out.

Looking for a well centered PSA 7 of Mantle and Mays.......any help out there?
    Thanks Scott

You're not alone in that quest. Santo was one of the more sought after 8's, but while the pops have gone up they don't seem to show up in the market.

  • Just a note - and I presume there are a few '64 stand up set collectors out there considering the auctions as of late - I finally got a jan sub pop on two crossovers - Rich Rollins PSA 8 NQ from an SGC 92 and Bob Friend PSA 7 from a BVG 7.5.

I'm stoked! The Rollins is one of the four lowest pops in PSA 8. It's a cornerstone low pop common to complete the set in 8 or better.

Don't start bag'n on the cross over, please. This card is destined for a full PSA registered set (mine for now...)

awesome set...I am close...need 3-4 more, including the Clemente and Koufax. Some upgrades needed. Think I am #13 or so on the registry. The unopened pack that I have with Yaz on top is awesome as well. Goes great with my Yaz unopened stuff.

Scott- a public thank you for a very fine transaction on the stand ups.

  • Just bringing up the old thread because of a new ebay item that stand up collectors are probably watching. There is a Baldschun in PSA 8 that the seller announced by emailing me from my set ID email. (Bet he emailed everyone else, too.)

    Item 320496113204

Anyway, the scan is large and shows enough detail to prove to me the bidders are buying the grade not the card. This is the lowest pop 8 of all the cards in the 77 player set so I can see why there is active bidding, but the card has specks in the yellow background field and the overall color is not too saturated. The centering is very good, however. It will be interesting to see where it ends up.
