Teddy Roosevelt Inaugural Medal...

The TR inaugural medal is awesome and I would love to own one for the historical significance alone. I believe that the medal was designed by St. Gaudens. I also believe that even a beat-up one is probably much more than I can afford.image

Does anyone know how many of these medals were made and what their rarity level?

2 in gold, 120 in bronze.

In my opinion, this is a case where the price reflects the demand than the rarity.

How much do the bronze ones usually sell for?

James Earl Fraser also did a TR medal dated 1920.

Adolph Weinman did most of the work and Saint-Gaudens sketched the design and directed modifications. The medal was a necessary prelude to the coinage redesign and gave Roosevelt and Saint-Gaudens a chance to work together and adapt their communications styles to each other – well, more like S-G adapted to TR.

The President later noted that he really didn’t like the portrait, but the eagle was “just bully.”

See my book Renaissance of American Coinage 1905-1908 for more information on the medal and its relationship to coinage, or Mike Moran’s book Striking Change that has a more detailed look at Saint-Gaudens’ medals including the 1906 Franklin piece.

I wonder how the 1906-07 coinage redesign would have gone if Weinman had been S-G’s assistant instead of the less talented Henry Hering?
