Do you think the 2001-S (Proof) Sacagawea has potential for price increase in the future????

...Or will it eventually only be worth a small premium. This coin is one that really got me into coin collecting in 2003 and I have seen the value decrease ever since. This was one everyone seemed to think would have a "rare" coin type of following...but now it seems to be no big deal.Give me your thoughts (and post one if you would like)! image

I dont see it happening as I see several sitting in cases for sale locally, and I have never been able to realize sheet much less a strong premium for this date. Pleanty available in both the clad, and silver sets that get broken up. I am not a modern maker, so I cant comment on say a PCGS Pf-70DCAM ?

  • The only increase would be in sentimental value, but that is the best kind anyway.
  • The re-introduction of the Sacagawea Golden Dollar (with changing reverses) into circulation next year may draw more collectors to the series. Also, in the likely event the paper dollar is discontinued in the near future that would certainly change things as well.

I do not usually buy modern stuff...but I have always thought this coin is worth having.
  • I thought the reason this one was valuble was due to the Mint's sales practice in 2001 of not allowing buyers to purchase large numbers of Proof Sets. When the coin shops tried to fill orders from collectors the price rose until enough 2001 Sacs came in the front door.

I don't personally think they will appreciate in value in the near term. To me this is the same case as the 1986 Mint Sets.

Realize, I am repeating what I've read on this board so consider the source!

I didn't realize the 2009s were going into circulation. I guess they will circulate about as much as all the other dollar coins. Oh, if only the dollar bill was sent out to pasture...

OK, but also there were both copper-nickel and silver proof sets and both mintages have to be added to see how many - don't have those stats right now but seem really too high to me to support the current price, let alone a hike even with a possible modest influx of new collectors to the sereies.
