The Unofficial Millenia Sale in progress~ Report

I was not fortunate enough to make it to the auction though I am watching from my computer. So far ALL of the coins are going for way more than the estimates!

What's it look like from another end? Any bidders care to chime in?

IMO this is going to be a record sale!

Could somebody post a link for live action?

    Thanks.

I think I just bought the two cheapest coins in the Roman section as "tokens of the sale". Lot numbers 76 and 100. The first at nearly twice what it brought in Triton (2005).

Many of the Gold Aureus are going for 2.5x the High Estimate....

The Severus Alexander just went for $800k
  • The estimates might end up being thought of as "if only..." prices. sigh.

JZ, I still like that dog. image Some mint engraver ought to consider it as a design for a coin.

The catalog editor ought to be ashamed with that Severus Alexander header - "Finest of two Known" - I guess the buyer knew it was the finer anyhow.

Interesting results thus far... some real stunning pricesimage

Edited to add... I thought the 1746 proof Crown graded PR65 by NGC was stunning. I would think that example has to be among the finest known and that was part of a 1746 set offered and the other coins within the set were just not as nice as the Crown. I think the hammer was 17,500 plus the 15%. The 1746 LIMA Crown sold above the 10-12k estimate which I thought was insanely high... I think the hammer on that was 15,500image

I can safely say that the Victorian Sovereigns are on fire now. The 1837 pattern coin with 3-5 known sold for OVER 20K and an 1839 Proof 65 DC sold for a whopping 17.5K!!! My 1839 PCGS 64 DC is looking nicer all the time!
The 1934 trade sold for 20K with a 3K est. WOW.
I was priced out of all of them except the 1887 Victoria sovereign proof. Got that one for about 2K. I really hoped for the 1871 to find its way to me but at 13K it was just to tough!

This was amazing and really exciting though!

Following the action on the ebay live site. It seems like many of the german state silver taler lots appear to be going fairly close to estimate. Several exceptions, but not as many as I would have expected.

Considering that the coin was very PL under the dark toning and technically superb, and that the piece had the ultimate provenance, the coin was worthy of "presentation piece" status. As such, it wasn't a horrible value. In fact, I bid something over the high estimate "for stock".

Whew.....some amazing coins. The best I could do is runner up on one coin and not close on 2 other lots. Time to cross my fingers for tomorrow.

Missed out on the 1732M Gold Johanna (12800 Reis) by $1000, but too bad.

Anyone got one in MS for sale ? I now begin the hopefully not too long search for another.

The 1746 proof is indeed a higher grade coin than the Lima, but not by much, and the Lima is more outstanding for what it is than the proof is for what it is.

This should come as great news to the resident church mouse... image ...who, as legend has it, is sitting on bags of them in high MS.

Thanks for your thoughts Andy... I saw the 1746 proof Crown at the NYI as well as the LIMA... I thought the proof was possibly an upgrade. Unfortunately, the LIMA did not leave the same impression. I will obviously agree that it was a nice coin. The finest known? not sure...image
