A very remarkable '73-D quarter.

No, it won't go for moon money anytime soon but I got an AU+ slider
of this date in circulation recently. It's a fresh strike from new dies but
the strike is slightly oblique and the tops of the letters in LIBERTY aren't
fully struck. The coin has only been used in about fifteen transactions if
they were typical. It has some marking in the field which was probably
there before it left the mint but is otherwise clean. Without the wear it
would grade MS-64.

This is remarkkable on several levels. Primarily it's nearly two full grades
nicer than the XF- unattractive specimen that had been in my collection.
It's a full three grades higher than the nicest coin you can expect to find.
This date had a mintage of only 230 million and is relatively common in
BU rolls. There are no gem or near-gem coins in the rolls though. There
are probably fewer than half a million of this date in grades over VF-. It
just never got any respect because there have always been lots of cast
off rolls from mint sets cut for the mint set only dollar coins. The mintage
was too high to get speculator attention.

I suppose that what might be most remarkable is that this coin is virtually
certain to have been a mint set coin. The odds of this very tough date be-
ing found through mere chance are simply too close to zero to consider an
alternative.

Ive seen a few dimes in circulation with mint set crimping damage. There
were only, perhaps, a hundred thousand of these made so it's an interest-
ing way to estimate the number of mint sets remaining. Of course it's hard-
ly conclusive of much since these go into circulation preferentially because
of collectors and are likely removed preferentially by the public because they
are different. They hardly constitute any sort of sample.

This coin now completes my clad quarter set from circulation in nice attractive
XF!! The lowest grade coin in the collection now is the '70-P which is a very
nice solid XF. It has a lot wear but it's a nice well-made example.
