OK Jefferson Guys, a question for you!!

MadMartyMadMarty Posts: 16,697 ✭✭✭
I have been going though rolls of Jeffs, mostly from the late 50s to early 60s. Why is it then the coin has a handicap ramp there are no hits on it all, but them it even has a remote shot at Full Steps, there is a gash! right down the stairs?
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

Seriously, dude. I know just what you mean. I had a roll not too long ago of 1959's and that exact description could have applied to half the coins. Great strike, gem surfaces, and one big hit right exactly where it is least acceptable.

Funny how that works out, isn't it?

    Marty,

Still scrathing my head on your Engrish, but if I translate it correctly...

I think what your talking about is called the "minting process." However, you might or might not be interested to know... some of the coins with wheel chair ramps are still very desirable in MS67 or higher. Make some of those. Like maybe a dozen of the following in MS67:

    1939S Ty 1: total current pop: 7
    1941 total current pop: 8
    1942 Ty 1 total current pop: 5
    1944P total current pop: 14
1945P total current pop: 33 (and still sells for $500 each)
1946P through the 1970S... total pop: 50ish combined for all dates/mints for mint state coins

Come On... bust these pops wide open!

Ummm....maybe the metal softens when it is pushed into the die for the fully struck steps but it stays harder when it isn't. Some kind of micro-annealing going on from the localized heat generated as the metal gets squished into the steps. Naah...., couldn't be..... image

Not a good idea to have a thread like this if your planning on putting them on BST after ... SEGS will give the step designation with the nicks/hits qualifier and you can get a premium for the tougher dates
If you can't swim you better stay in the boat.......

With fully struck steps, there is more there to get hit?

    Exactly.

This perversity extends right up to the 1980's for the Jeffersons.

Most coins have a correlation between cleanliness, strike quality,
and die quality which makes them far easier to find in superb gem
than they'd otherwise be, but there is a little inverse correlation in
    the Jeffersons.

It really gets frustrating when looking through rolls and knowing
there should be some gems because there are so many close.

    Jeffersons from about '65 to '90 have another very annoying trait;
there are huge numbers of one-sided gems.

    AARRGggHhhhhhhh.
