Competitors bidding to make you pay more...

Like me, I know many collectors purchase several of the same cards. Has anyone experienced their competitors using alias names to raise your costs of an auction? I've pissed off alot of people by bidding on multiple cards but I never hide behind another name. Is that a good strategy or just cowardly?

Please give me your opinion.

Thank you,

Danny

Why would it piss people off? Who cares if you bid and win multiples of the same card? Guess I have too many other things to worry about. image

    I don't get it.

I don't really get it either. I just bid what I am willing to pay. I have never been inclined to spend time studying the other bidders. I just figure if they bid more then they want it more. No biggie, on to the next listing.

What does this have to do with the PSA Set Registry Forum??

1st off, NO ONE can make me pay more than I am comfortable and happy to pay. If its above that price, i don't buy the card.

2nd, like Josh said, why would this make anyone angry? Obviously you value the cards more than they guy who you are outbidding, so the card deserves to go to you. If the other guy wants it more he should outbid you. Otherwise, wait for the next one or go buy stuff at card stores. We all know how ebay works, he who bids highest wins..Pretty simple.

I've never understood why people feel the need to hide and/or have multiple accounts. I buy and sell on the same account I've had for 10 years. My wife also buys and sells on the same ID as me. Although I do have to stomach the occasional ribbing from some of the guys here who, for whatever reason, like to track my bid history and ask if I'm enjoying the nice dress the wife bought...lol...It's just easier to keep track having ONE ID and not feeling like I need to be afraid of others watching what I bid or sell. I have nothing to hide, not even from Mr. IRS..lol

My sets continues to grow, so obviously it hasn't hurt my buying habits.

  • Brian,
People occasionally get ticked when you out bid them. Am I the only person to get nasty Ebay mail about outbidding, over paying, "you already have one"?

    Ping,
My question is directly related to competitors or members of the PSA Registry... is their another board better suited for this type of question?

    Jason,
I agree that you set limits on yours bids and the snipe service is perfect for this... which I use 90% of the time. Like you, I use one ebay account. I know some like to have a "buyer" and "seller" account which is cool.

I don't care if a Registry competitor raises or outbids me but I do have a problem when they try to conceal their identity. It appears they're only bidding to make me pay more for the auction. In this last case, they actually won the auction thinking I would set a higher snipe. In my opinion, it is cowardly and unethical.

Just blowing some smoke... have a good weekend all.

ping is crotchety, just like his icon. Ignore him.

And yes, I think you are the only one to get hate mail. I've never gotten that, but then I don't win the same card more than once, so maybe that's why. image

Maybe all that smoke is making you paranoid. There are many here that collect more than one of the same card of a player. Even a card of a certain former Congressman and wide receiver.

I've been outbid and have outbid several board members.

As others have already said, either you're looking at things too personally, you've got too much time on your hands, or you're doing something to else to tick people off.

I've been on eBay for 10 years, and while I've noticed competition with many of the same buyer (specifically on 1977 Topps Mexican Football), I've never gotten to the point that I felt they were puposely trying to make me spend more.
  • Isn't the general purpose of buying more than one of the same card to find the most gradable card for submission ? I've been outbid alot especially when it comes to PSA Dolphins, and I get pissed off that someone is willing to pay more, but there are still so many un-tapped sources of new un-opened material, that another chance will usually always come around. However... a few years ago I did outbid MOSH and sent a taunting email but never hate mail.
Any team on any given Sunday, can beat any other team...unless they were playing the Miami Dolphins in 1972.

As OSClabs mentioned - sniping is a great way to bid only what you intend to bid and NOT let other people know that you're bidding until the last second. I win some and lose some. But, I NEVER get caught up in the emotion of bidding and pay more than I'm willing. Also - if anyone gets pissed at me for winning - thats their problem. They should have bid more.

Amen, brother. I mean you can be upset at not getting a card you want, but you can't be pissed at someone else just b/c they are willing to pay more than you are. That is what free markets are all about, simple supply and demand at its finest. While we all compete with each other on some level, it's not (or at least it shouldn't be) like we are out to get each other. There are certain cards out there that some people have the willingness (and the means) to pay more than others. That's life, man.

take a look at this set.
    1966 registry

#1 is also #3 and climbing.
do it i think it is odd that he wants to be 1-2 in the same set--yes.
do i wish when he already owns a card he would not bid on another copy-yes.
am i jealous or ticked because he has more money to blow on cards than i do-NO.

he has actually bought cards from me. there are cat and mouse games to play if i need the card or if i think he needs it. i try to guess his snipes and others do as well. we have probably cost each other several thousand if not into the 5 figures on our urge to have a card now. that is my problem and my fault. vcp has really helped me put in smart bids if i think he is after it.

all i can say he has one heck of a set and one day i will beat him. if it weren't him it would be someone else.

you admit yourself that you but the same card multiple times. would do you with the extra copies?
