Blundered "8 over 8"? What do you guys think? NEW ERROR???

I've posted this coin before. But, I just noticed that it looks like there is another "8" under the "Blundered 8".
Am I just seeing things? image

    No you're not seeing things.
There definately is another 8 under the bottom of an 8 that is punched into the rock base.
It is just to the right of the 5 in the date.

This coin is an example of WB (Wiley / Bugert) 105.

The lower line is apparently part of the design and matches the photograph in their book, on p. 129, about Seated Halves.

Also, they mention that there is "something (top loop of an 8?) in the denticles below the 58 in the date.

They list as an R-4 in XF/AU.

Reference books sure do come in handy at times.

  • Firstmint,
Where did you find this book?
    Thanks!!!

The Wiley / Bugert book on Seated Half Dollars is out of print, with no apparent intentions of getting it reprinted (according to one of the authors) that I spoke with last year.

It is the best attribution guide for the series.

If you can locate a copy, expect to pay between $3-400 for it.

Very cool MPD, and and a no-brainer at that. Some of the listed MPDs I see appear to be a bit questionable to me (in various series), but not this variety.

    Really neat coin! image
  • Found the book reference. But, it's completely different than what I have.

That coin in the Heritage auction is a WB-103, yours is a WB-105. Believe it or not, there are two varieties of 1858-O's with digits in the rock.

Not to criticize, but what you found was merely a reference to a WB attribution for an 1858-S half. It wasn't even the correct page to the actual reference book.

Permit me to quote from WB on the 1858-O -

"This date is fascinating for its blundered dates".

Your example is one of several blundered obverse dies which were used at all the mints this year.

There may even be the bottoms of three different 8's in the base of the rock. Please repost without the right blue arrow.

I like those misplaced digits. Neat error.
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.

Look at the two closely overlapping bottoms of 8's directly above the 8, and then look at another curved line to the right of them. Seems to be a tighter radius, though. Possibly the bottom of a 5?

  • Any price idea on this variety?
