Another hidden gem?

Why are the LAST cards of Hofers not worth more than they are? I think the last card should be worth more than a basic common. I am not talkng about current issues but the last card issued before retirement.

In theory, if you're talking about the 1950s-80s, there were more cards made each year than the previous year, so the "last" card of any player is more available than those that came before.
  • I remember in the 80's when Beckett kept saying last year cards, 2nd years cards and cards with stars in the background were the best buys. Guess not.

They're not as valuable since by the time the player retired, people actually cared about his cards and probably took a bit better care of them.

I also think the whole "last card" appeal is limited because Topps would not always produce a card the year after the player retired, making the last card actually available have incomplete career stats. For example, Koufax retired after the '66 season, but Topps did not produce a card for him (I'm not counting League Leader cards) so the last card for him (1966) doesn't have all his stats. This is the same situation for star players such as Mays, Banks, Ford, Aaron & many others. Some of the only situations where a card was issued with complete career stats are the '69 Mantle & '73 Clemente, and I feel those cards are highly sought after by collectors.

in short, because Topps didn't place a big emphasis on last year cards I feel many collectors do not.

And how did Ken Hubbs rate a memorium card but not Clemente or Munson?

Ken Hubbs vs Bob? easy answer MLBPA. Topps prolly did not want to pay but they COULD have isuued a 1974/1973 NLCS card to do that. Idiots.

  • Hall of Famers are Hall of Famers no matter if it's their rookie or last card. My opinion, they should always be a listed card and considered above the commons.
