Found a 1999 Kennedy that is actually circulated

Maybe this isn't THAT unusual, but I thought it was weird to see a coin this new, that is almost never seen in circulation, this worn. I thought this is almost down to EF status. Is this a rare finding? I know it's not worth anything, but still. This also got me thinking about my next question, what is it that actually causes coins to wear down the most? Is it sliding them across tables and countertops thousands of times through the years, does most of the wear occur when people grab handfuls of change and toss it, coin counters?

  • Rubbing against other coins (and keys) in pockets, change purses, car ash trays and coin jars and drawers... is my answer.

In my last coinstar run I put a few 2004, 2005 and 2006 JFK's in.

Common finding. I once found a 1994-P half in AG. That's rare.

A few weeks or a couple of months in a casino may have caused the wear.
  • I find halves hard to find in my area of Massachusetts.
However late dates ones like your 1999 are harder to find and then are usually quite worn. Earlier dates like the 1970's are more common and have less wear. My theory is that the late date ones have spent time in the casinos. I have read that the slot machines are hard on them since payouts drop from a higher height to create a racket to impress the customers.

    I found 3 of them from a $10 roll I got from my bank today... (2) 1999d & (1) 1999p...
2 were low Unc's & one was an AU...
  • Casinos, ahh yes it's all so clear now. I remember when I was a kid, my grandparents took me to Carson City--One of the small casino's there actually used Morgans; Has anyone been to CC, NV lately? Is this still going on? I know for a fact that some Vegas casinos have used Eisenhowers in recent years now that I think about it, but I couldn't imagine using real silver of any type now image

Most casino's I have been to use their own tokens. I think it would be great if they start using the new dollars and maybe get back into the Kennedy thing.
  • Blackjack tables keep rolls of Kennedys to this day right there on the table for the odd half dollar payouts when a player draws a blackjack, depending on your bet, of course.
