THIS JUST IN - 1809 O.113 bust half - R.5 - opinions please

I just got this coin in hand from a recent ebay auction. Granted it has been gently dipped and wiped (some hairlines evident in the photos below) and the color is closer to the last two photos (seller's). It still has a nice general appearance to the toning. I still can't seem to get the color adjustments right on my personal photos (first three photos). Sorry.

It's a tough R. 5 and the general condition is really very good. Typically struck with a flat left wing, this one has better detail than most. Look at the detail in the claws and the stars! Some original luster cartwheels a bit between the stars. Closeup shows one of the diagnostic die cracks for the O. 113.

I'd appreciate your comments on the grade level and condition of the coin. Bust Half nuts - I'd be interested in your estimate of value as well, just to see if I overpaid or not. Personally, I think I've made a pretty good investment and added a great coin to my ongoing set of CBHs - now up to 76 coins and 71 die marriages.

Thanks
zap

  • The best one at heritage was graded VF-30 (Reiver) and has far less detail than yours, and that sold for $2760 2.5 years ago. I would net grade yours an XF 40 (AU details), and it would sell for at auction whatever it would sell for, which would likely be more than that I would think...

If you got that for under 3500 then IMO you got a steal. 3800 to 4000 would be about right I think. Herman list one 50 and 3 45's. I would say that yours is right in that neighborhood.

Edit to add: I just did a search on Ebay and it is official.

Since everyone else says it's a great coin for the variety, then I'm not going to lie.

It's definitely a much tougher DM than most R5's
  • WOW, a great looking coin. I'm thinking EF-40/XF-45.

Does this mean he paid $200 or something absurd?

Let's just say that he got a reasonable deal for a common DM and that if he wants to double his money then he needs to PM me.

My first "You Suck" - it feels great!!!

Thought I'd get one for the 1812 single leaf I got for $125 but you guys are stingy!

Thanks for the feedback and expert opinions. At this point it's not for sale, but OKBustchaser seems to be first in line for two of my coins now.

    Thanks, JRocco.

I don't have easy access to many coin shows (nor have the time to get to them), so the internet is my coin show. I do find that trolling through ebay auctions and other auction sites is incredibly educational and occasionally one finds a raw coin popping up that makes your jaw drop.

On this 1809 O.113 I felt I had it identified about 90% confidently from the seller's photos - I placed a snipe bid that would be a cause for a serious discussion with my spouse. I also took a chance on the grade and condition of the coin, given the quality of the photos. I figured it was dipped and probably wiped a bit as well. I checked Dave Rutherford's auction listings for the die variety, saw how rarely this one appeared and got a sense for the price range. I really didn't think I would win it with my bid. I figured other BH nuts had also seen it and were going to snipe it with a bigger pocket book than I have. I actually got it for about $200 less than my bid. Amazing!

It's been a thrill, to say the least.

And my wife has a newly found respect for the time and occasional money I'm spending on these quaint little 50 cent pieces.

I looked up the completed listing, too.

That is an awesome score, Zap. Congrats!

Chance definitely favors the prepared mind...

(And 71 unique DM's in your set of 76? Dang!)

    Thanks, Tychojoe.

You hear it over and over again to buy the book first...

I think I was first inspired along these lines when I read early in my time becoming reinterested in my coins (I collected as a young boy and then came back to it in my late 30s) about some YN that read Breen voraciously and scored a rare variety on a gold coin at a show, buying it for normal price and flipping it for thousands more. I figured I better start reading... and it's not so much about making the big score ($$) as it is finding that rare coin among the many that are out there. I almost get the sense that the coin is rescued - finally identified for who it is. A bit romantic, perhaps...

    The $$ is nice, too...

College costs are arriving in a few years for us and I fear I'll become a seller rather than a buyer.

If you think you are likely to sell that piece in the near future it would be wise to sell now while the market is hot and you have access to the specialists who will pay the Overton premium. Having access to the Overton specialists is the key. You must not allow yourself to get out of touch with that market.

Sage advice. I have hopes of 100 die marriages and acceptance into the Bust Half Nut Club - with a limited budget and still about 30 to go I'm hopeful of achieving this goal within three years. You're right that the CBHs are hot now. Prices are going through the roof. Anybody with a crystal ball out there who can tell us how long the market will stay hot?

Let's see... I'm 57. I plan on retiring (again) in 9 years. My guess is that the market will stay strong another 8 and a half years and then plummet.
