Hello everyone, new member here

Hello everyone,
I 've been reading the boards here for a few months and just signed up as a member. I also wanted to thank everyone for their posts on this board...it's been very helpful to me as well as enjoyable.
Now about me.
I'm going to be 40 this August and I work as a Propmaker in the Los Angeles area. I build sets and just about anything that is set related for movies and tv shows. Of course I'm happilly married with one son and we live in Redondo Beach, CA. I grew up playing baseball during the '70's and was always a big baseball fan. I believe my father started buying cards for me back in '73 and I stopped collecting baseball cards in '81 I believe. So I've got lots to learn again. My recent interest in cards began as I've been going to baseball games with my wife and little boy. Just recently I went through my collection and started purchasing cards so my son Wyatt (he'll be 3 on May 27th) and our soon to arrive baby (sex unknown) will have something to save from their parents. I believe it's special!

On a sad note, I've been unfortunately recovering from a work related injury from last month. I basically ground off the top of my left thumb and had to have a matrix graft from my left toe so my card collecting and sorting is on hold right now. Hopefully I'll be back to work some time next month, but with some restrictions. For now, I'll enjoy some extra time with my family and and enjoy reading this message board.

As soon as I start working again, I'll be looking for some rookie cards. I'll be sure to post when I'm ready.

Thanks,
Brian

Welcome BMan , Cool introduction !

That sucks about the thumb thing though but at least it was not worse than it sounds like it could have been .

It's a good thing something like that did not happen to me because I'll be dammed if I'm going to let them stick anything from my stinkin foot on a hand I hold my food with , Not when I'm in my swettin boots for sometimes 16 hours a day image

Thanks for all the hellos and well wishes!

My collection right now is what I kept as a kid. Topps '71 thru '81, but I did buy some '66 to 70's when I was younger. So I mainly kept HOF's, All Stars and Dodgers (we are Dodgers fans). As a kid, I didn't know better, so I doubt any of the cards exceed PSA 5 or 6 type grades, but I will replace for better cards as I can., but they certainly bring back some great memories.

A few months ago I bought about 500 hundred dollars worth of wax packs, cellos, and rack packs. All the '78 to '81's are unopened and I ripped open everything else (82 to current packs, Topps, UD, Bowman, ETC). Now we are off to a great start! I think I'll probably start using some cards for TTM's. And yes, I will be teaching my son how to rip open wax and packs, but I think I will not touch my rack packs.

My basic wants when I get back to work and start getting some money: 71 Steve Garvey PSA 7 to 8, various 1968 Cards rookies and HOF players, a few Stan Musial cards (my late father was from Illinois and his favorite player was Stan the man -sorry Cubs fans, lol), Brooklyn Dodgers cards, and many others. Growing up in the 70's leaves the door open for lots of wants...So many HOF's and players that should be HOF players. I also bought a few Topps 2008 Heritage cards last week, so maybe I'll add more of those.

For now I just gotta get well and back to work, and pray the Actors (SAG) get their new contract signed by the end of June!

    Thanks again everyone, great reading!!!!

  • Hi Brian

From one new member to another,

Nice introduction! It sounds like you have a wonderful family; a very cool job, which I trust you'll be back at in no time; and a love for the game of baseball and a card-collecting history that runs not unparallel to mine (only I'm on the other side of 40).

And you're right about these boards: From what I've read, there are many good, knowledgeable folks here. That's the reason I joined, too.

    Welcome!

    Hi Brian

    Welcome!

I'm really sorry to hear about your accident - seems you have an interesting job. My brother is a cabinet maker and did the same exact thing - we played in a band together and he had to stop playing for 2 yrs! I wish you all the luck in the world.

Now for the hobby - children many times can be the impetus to bring you back - and for that...welcome back!!!!

My advice? Been collectin for over 30 yrs - more actively since 1988 - and I've come to two important conclusions:

    1. Have FOCUS - otherwise one can find themselves running all over the continent!
    2. Have a BUDGET - unless you're independently wealthy? It will eliminate the nite sweats and keep your wife off your back! image

Good luck - don't be a stranger - shoes optional and have a speedy recovery!

Welcome to the boards! I primarily collect Topps baseball All-Star cards from 1975 thru 1981. If there are any AS Dodgers from that time frame that you are having a difficult time finding, let me know. I might be able to help. image

Thanks for the great advice Mike, I think along those lines and I totally agree with you! Before I entered into my current profession, I had over 10 years of GM experience in the automotive racing industry, as well as running a professional drag racing operation. Because of that background, I always approach things like a business. Also, my older brother told me this before I got married, "Brian, a Happy Wife is a Happy Life" .

bobbybakeriv, I will certainly let everyone know what I'm looking to purchase when I get back to work.

    Thanks everyone,
    Brian
  • Welcome!!! And sorry to hear that you suffered one of the worst nightmares for a card collector, an inactive thumb, NOOOOOOOOO! LOL.
