A word of advice for anyone taking inventory of their collection......

Do it as you purchase things, and keep a running tally of what you spend, what stuff is worth, etc. I didn't and now I've been at it for 3 months off and on and I'm still not finished, though I can see the finish line. Time consuming! But necessary.

Thats why you get a collection manager.

    That aint no lie Ron.

That ship sailed 30 yrs ago! I have no idea how much I have or any idea what it's all worth. Of course the 90s crap I'm saving for the big freeze!

Now, the invoice stays with the item if in an album or filed otherwise.

VCP has been a great help for me in terms of graded cards. I'd like to see it improved, but it's been really helpful.

Once I get the cards done, then I can move on to autographs.....sigh.

I get your point Ron. You're right...really tough to keep track of what you paid unless you just do it as you go...

That said, anything that's in my PC - if I'm forced to sell it, what I paid isn't going to make much difference, because I would have to be in a real bind to start selling off cards, comics or autographs.
  • Honestly you can keep track of everything without an account manager. Microsoft Office has a program called Microsoft Access. The account ledger feature is really useful when it comes to keeping track of everything. You can include transaction amount whether collected or spent, the date of purchase or sale, as well as notes and descriptions to help find them faster. It gives you a final tally of money everytime you add or remove something, and is quite simple to use.
  • So what if I buy a 1979 unopened pack of Topps baseball, pull an Ozzie rookie card and it grades a 10. Is the cost a fraction of the $12 I paid for the unopened pack? Plus grading fees of course. Oh, and then I trade it for a Ryan rookie card and a poor condition Aaron rookie. What is the "cost" of the 2 new cards?

It's question like those that keep me from even trying to keep track. I often wonder what would happen if I had to make an insurance claim. There's no way at this point I could even start to catalogue 40 years worth of collecting, trading, buying and selling. Any attempt to do so would also take all the fun out of it.

My only plan at this point is to dump it all on some unsuspecting relative when I pass on. image

That was one of the advantages of selling 90% all my original stuff and starting over again back in 2000. I started cataloging from day one and it saved me a tremendous amount of time in the long run. Now I just want to add the PSA certs on my Excel spread sheet. That will be a good winter time project. Good luck!!!

Or you could do like I do.......I have recorded, by hand, every card in every set I was working on in a thick spiral notebook and wrote the price and grade next to the card. I started this years ago before I even had a computer. I haven't the desire to transfer it to the computer....
