Nice copper- 1795 Catherine II 5 Kopeks

I didn't realize these were such large pieces.
Very nice detail for such an old piece. This one shows well even though it has been used.
Anyone familiar with these coins care to share a grading opinion?

That is one of the nicest ones I've ever seen. Grade? AU?

Terrific example... seems that ones dated from the 1790's do not appear often in high grade. It is AU and a wonderful coin.

  • I'd go with XF45 - AU50.

The meaning of life ? I don't know but I am sure that coins have something to do with it.

I agree with coinkat's assessment. Great coin image

Nice detail on the wings on that piece! I also vote AU. I have seen several in NGC XF holders and yours is much nicer. I think NGC is a bit liberal on the grades in this series.

Interesting... I would have suspected these would not fit in NGC holders

I was surprised about that also. NEN had a few pieces a couple of weeks ago - Russian and Siberian. They are really squeezed into the holders.

    Lovely coin.

The 10 kopecks don't. There's an absolutely gorgeous Novodel 10k 1779-KM graded MS67RB (!) by NGC in the upcoming Millenia sale that is too large for the holder, but that's why they use multiholders nowadays for such coins. I suspect that they're too thick for slabbing.

    Nice example for sure.

I love these huge 2 & 5 Kopek pieces - they really have some heft to them!
I wonder if there are any known proof examples? How cool would that be?

I really like these huge chunks of copper. Here's one I have sitting around:

For those of us who can't read Russian, what's the denomination of that coin Roman. Lovely coin by the way.

    Thanks, Don. It's a 5 Kopecks.
