Should the "Cheerios" Sacagawea Dollar be required in the Major and Complete PCGS Registry Set?? I was told that PCGS is adding the Cheerios Sacagawea Dollar to the Major Variety set.
No, poll was held for this, like when the SF coins were being debated.
I personally own a Cheerios Sac but cannot see adding a coin with only 15 pieces graded by PCGS, and only 40 coins confirmed to exist to a set with almost 300 participants. This would mean that only two dozen out of 300 COULD have 100% complete sets and I am sure that even less would be able to afford one at current levels.

What is your opinion??

I don't know enough about the set being argued or the coin itself but I saw my first cheerios sac in hand today at the (dissapointing image) columbus show. It was in a PCGS 67 holder and the plastic cheerios holder that the coin was cut out of was also there. It was pretty cool to finally see one.

This post isnt about the coin, its about the cost. If the coin was available at a low price, there wouldnt be a post.

Yes, certainly. Its a clear obvious variety and it does a series good to have a trophy coin.

"I would have liked to have the Cheerios coin in the major set as it would have tempted me to start a new set of Sacs again but its no big deal and it helps the many others who don't have one."

    Sure.

They've done the same for other sets. For instance, in the IHC variety set, when 4-6 of a variety were in PCGS holders, they were added. I think the current pops have removed the Cheerios Sac from the "uncollectible" category.

I agree with Syl,,, why put a coin in a set that 99% of the people will never be able to own? I would think this would discourage particapation in the registry, not encourage it.

Put it in The Complete Varieties Set but leave it out of The Major Varieties Set.

Gary - With all due respect, the issue is whether, or not, the variety in question is a "major" variety, not whether putting it where it belongs may or may not invite more participation in a particular set or not. Relatively few people can afford the 1990 NO S cent or 1856 Flying Eagles, or 1969 DDO cents, etc., etc., etc. But, that is not the issue and probably never will be for recognizing a major variety as a major variety.

No, because the experts are calling it a pattern.

Steve: Even assuming it is a pattern, which PCGS does not call it so there is no issue there at all - why should the coin be treated any differently than the pattern 1856 Flying Eagle cent, which IS in the registry? Wondercoin

If I owned one I would say YES. I don't own one so I say NO!

How's that for trying to be politically correct?

  • Well, you're talkin about "the major and complete PCGS Registry Set." So to me the only issue is whether or not the SAcagawea Cheerios is a major variety. Gosh yes, it is. Doesn't matter that it's scarce or expensive. It is a major variety and belongs in the set.

    Best wishes,

The change has been made. I am currently #1 Finest of All Time, until Wondercoin fixes his. Take your time, take your time, theres no hurry.image I wonder how "CGC" will feel being #3 or #4 now. Been #1 for years.
    This really rearranges things.

Are they going to add the "Flaming Eagle" Variety to the Cherry Pickers Guide?..Then to the Complete Variety set?
It is a pretty cool looking Reverse.
