Show off your 48 leafs

Well, Im pretty happy with my most recent subs from PSA, all the cards Ive bought on ebay arrived safe and sound with reasonable shipping (even the card i bought from nick) and Ive had several successful deals with some very cool people on the boards.

All in all, im pretty happy. image

A good friend of mine I PM regularly suggested I start a thread about one of my favorite sets, the 48 leafs (since an 84 topps set would drive lee into a steroid induced rage)
So here goes, these are some of my favorite leafs, a set Ive been working on for quite awhile in raw and graded, post some of yours!!

    Good for you.
  • I just won this a few days ago. I have had 4 of these in the past, and kept upgrading...haven't ever found one i liked without spending $10K+ until i found this one. Besides the print dot (yes its a dot) in the right border, it is very eye appealing for this very tough card.

Nice Robinson, but I believe he meant football.

Nice scans Joe. How about starting a thread like this when you have more than 8 minutes to devote to it.

Great thread Joe! I just wish I had some to show! image

    1948?
That would have to be Football cards. image

For anyone who cares....... All the the Baseball ones came out ONLY in 1949
(dont pay attention to the 1948 copyright on some cards, or misinformation in catalogs/PSA flips, they are wrong)

Gotta love the 48 Leaf..SO very tough to find in high grade...Even tougher than 1935 Chicle in most cases...Here's a few of mine:

Lest Mr. Luckman get no love...

    image

My 1948 Leaf set sits at just over 50% and I can't remember the last time I added a new card to it... some pretty aggressive bidding on these, and vintage football in general, as of late. I thought the economy was supposed to be sucking, dagnabbit!

Jasp, that McAfee is particularly stunning with the centering and color!

Ahman, good to see Sammy again and I assure you Mr. Trippi is well and sends his regards.

Joe needs to take care of his computer problems and show off some of the incredible examples he has squirreled away.

Dont be a hater Lee. image

Sorry guys, my computer to my scanner is officially gone. I spent, well, my much smarter wife spent about an hour last night on it (while i looked over her shoulder) trying to fix it. Wont be any scans coming from me for awhile. image

Nice Luckman Snorto, very very tough to find in high grade.

There are a few 48's that are really rare, especially towards the end of the set.

    #1 Luckman
    9 Thompson
    52 leo
    53 conerly
    54 chaz
    63 steiner
    80 youel
    etc

Does anyone know the story about how these were manufactured?

I was actually thinking about scanning my Ted Kluzewski '48 Leaf, but I know you meant football and that was a lot more work than finding a picture of leaves on the internet. Also, this way I get to maintain my reputation of being a sarcastic jackass who offers no real contribution to these boards.

Who gave you permission to start posting threads Joe? You reply, in limited quantities, and that is it. How dare you. First rule of etiquette to posting new threads, especially those asking for pics, is to be savvy enough with your scanner to post a few of your own. It's like posting a "What will my card grade?" thread, without a scan of the card. Hello...can we actually participate in this thread or are we resigned to just flaming you repeatedly?

So anyways, nice thread. Here are my '48 leafs...For a while anyway.

Two of the more desirable ones. Some weird guy who has a fascination with large, furry creatures that walk upright, sold these to me. Gave me some story about continuing his sasquatch research. Then rampled something about "VoltsxAmps = Current." Then he screamed "Viva la IBEW" or something like that...Anyway, here are the scans.

A good flaming amongst friends is a good thing Josh

2 Dueces told me if I didnt start a thread about 62 Fleer, I would find a horses head in my bed the next day. We compromised, I stared a 48 leaf thread, and next week he's starting a 62 Fleer thread image

That is a really nice Dudley man, very nice.

This is the last scan I have of a 48 leaf until I get my computer up and running again. This is the flagship of my collection, one of my favorite cards

Publius THAT is the one I was waiting for.

Envoy, say it ain't so! I saw your post over on the HOF RC thread that you may be exiting the set. Of course if you didn't have higher grade material than this bottom feeder collects, I might be thrilled with the prospect of picking up some of the gems you have assembled.

Thanks for the kind words guys. As soon as I get a few cards taken care of with another collector, the rest will slowly start finding their way on to the open market. Once I sell the first one, there's really no turning back for me. I really hate the prospect of selling it off, but I've got my eye on some lakeshore, and maybe a boat or a jet-ski. Something my whole family could enjoy, unlike my HOF set, which I enjoy immensely, but the wife and kid aren't quite as enamored.

Joe, did I get it right? volts x amps = current? I remember learning ohms law about 14 years ago, maybe I don't remember it so well. image Thought for sure you'd dig the "viva la IBEW" comment. Sheesh, can't get a rise out of you fer nuthin'. When did you became all relaxed and unflappable? image

One thing I wish I had done with my 48 leafs (with the exception of Leo and Chaz who are impossible to find at all) was to wait for well centered copies. Very tough set to find centered or without any surface blemishes. The VanBuren yellow jersey is a pop 2, with only one higher. Impossible card to find, kind of like the red pants Bobbie Layne. (Which I had a PSA 6 MC but traded straight up for a yellow pants 5) Really a great looking set. I've always like this and the 50 bowmans.
