Question about professional athletes

Does anyone know how many ways an athlete may be excused from participating in a game (outside of injury) ?

I know Joba Chamberlain was given permission to go see his sick dad.
I also know that Sandy Koufax would not pitch on the Sabbath (which was Saturday for him).

So are there any other reasons besides death, illness, or religious reasons why athletes can be excused from pariticipating ?

Speaking of religious reasons, could a Christian basketball player be excused from playing on Christmas day if he chose to ?
I know the NBA likes to play a few games on Christmas day.

Am sure you remember the old joke... after 1978, Fred Lynn couldn't play the day after a night game or the night after a day game.
