post a coin you haven't been able to ID yet

We have all come across a coin that is interesting enough to try to ID but just haven't been able to. Here's mine to start. If you can figure out a coin let us know.

That kind of looks like a mangled old button to me.

tbirde56 - Is there more to the story on this one? Intriguing.

Ancient? corroded and pitted copper? found during an archaeological excavation of an Ohio Woodland site dating to approximately 1000-1500 AD

  • that first pic does appear to have the remains of a button shank on the bank, but it still looks very intriguing. It's a very coin-like button, if that's what it is. Here's mine-- it has what looks to be a pine tree on the obverse, so i have this fantasy that it's an undiscovered 1776 New Hampshire Pine Tree farthing pattern. I say 'farthing' because it's just a bit bigger in diameter than a U.S penny. It's fairly thick and hammered, like an ancient greek bronze coin. My other theory is, if you turn it upside down, it looks like the bunch of grapes design on the Herod judean bronze coins. Still, it seems just a bit too thick and heavy to be one of those leptons. So I'm really pulling for my first theory!

I bought two coins from a "25 cent each" box once. It took me 40 years to ID them. Opened a book on medieval coins and there they were.
