New (to me at least) eBay scam

I received five "copies" of emails supposedly sent by me to other eBay members, touting an off-eBay electronic goods sale site.
I found a live chat page for the security department, and the person I contacted found that someone had accessed my account and used the system. She said the recipients were notified that I didn't send the messages, and reset my password.
My password hadn't been changed in many years, and it was only four characters - set before the current rules requiring at least 6.
Two morals, and one question come out of this experience.

Two morals, and one question come out of this experience.
- 1. Change passwords frequently
- 2. Use secure passwords with letters, numbers and special characters
- Would they have acted as quickly and efficiently if it had been one of their money-producing Power Sellers screwing with me, instead of a non-productive outsider?
