Lot of Two 2-Cent Pieces. 1864 Large Motto. AU58, glossy light brown with a few streaks of faded mint red on the reverse. A small, dull nick hidden in the leaves under the left arrow is the only detraction worth noting. Rim is crumbling above TRUST (beginnings of a cud). 1865, AU55 Red&Brown. An AU coin with quite a bit of faded red remaining, with blushes of gunmetal blue. Probably subjected to a very light soap&water cleaning, but not hairlined or ugly. Sold together as a lot. $201.22 Paypal or $195 check/mo.
1865 Fancy 5 Indian cent, MS-62 or so. Bright and very lustrous, with no trace of wear. Likely dipped at one time, but beautifully toned now, with yellow-orange hues on the obverse and a blush of rose color over gold on the reverse. There is a fairly sizeable nick in front of the Indian's face to the letter "D" that is easily visible without a loupe, or else this coin would be MS64+ due to its sharp strike and booming luster. Great sharpness in the diamonds on the hair ribbon and the headdress feathers. $82.74 Paypal or $80 check/mo.
1885 Indian Cent. XF40 or so. Perfect for the grade and totally problem-free. Three diamonds showing. $51.84 Paypal or $50 check/mo.
1908 Indian Cent. AU50 Original with some remaining faded red around the reverse devices. The strike is just "OK" and there is an absolutely tiny hairline running down the Indian's cheek. $10 Paypal or $9 check/mo. Reminder: shipping charges added to all items as specified in Terms & Conditions above.
1866-s half dime. Semi-key date H10c in VF+. Dipped long ago and now partly retoned, with a few darker toning spots about the reverse. Not a hairlined or ugly coin, just missing its original dirt. $98.17 Paypal or $95.00 check/mo.
1829 large cent, VG10 detail or so, but evenly porous with a dull scratch or scuff under Liberty's ear. The coin retains a pleasing appearance anyway, as it if free of major blemishes and has strong dentils around the border. $18.94 Paypal or $18.00 check/mo.
1829 large cent, an absolutely choice VG8 coin with beautiful color. A few tiny nicks as shown, and reverse rim is weak at top, but way better surfaces than you'd expect for a VG. A little verdigris around the reverse letters attests to its originality. $26.14 Paypal or $25.00 check/mo.
1839 Booby Head large cent. Certainly with details of VF, but some surface stains on obverse. A few of these may be due to an impurity in the planchet. No major scratches or injuries. Discounted, as you'd pay about $95 for this coin without the discoloration.
Price $44.66 by Paypal or $43 by check/money order.
1839 Head of 1838 large cent. Details of at lest VG. Not as common as 1837 or 1838 cents by any means. This is a decent average coin for the grade with no major distractions. The strike is weak and mushy in the lettering.
Price $16.88 by Paypal or $16 by check/money order.
1839 Silly Head large cent, Fine or a bit better. A few scattered ticks here and there, but no major injuries. I like the overall look and color of this coin, and it has a slightly woodgrained planchet. Price $50.84 by Paypal or $49 by check/money order.
1839 Silly Head large cent #2, a lower grade example which has been recolored. The coin is a more natural color in-hand, as my photo made it look more reddish than it is. No major injuries. Price $30.26 by Paypal or $29 by check/money order.
1840 large cent, a really nice Fine-15 example. The color is natural light brown, though the photo shows it a bit lighter than it really is. Just a few tiny nicks, and a little verdigris (crud) around the reverse lettering. This is a "large date", but it is one of the Newcomb varieties that actually has a small 18 and a large 40. I always thought this should be a separate Redbook variety, but it is not listed. A cool coin. $39.52 Paypal or $38.00 check/mo.
1849 cent. Details of nearly VF-20, but with some dark crud around the reverse devices, and the surfaces are a bit too dark. The 9 in the date may be recut. A nice affordable cent anyway, and it was the only 1849 cent in my set for some time. It's amzing you can buy coins like this for less than $20.
$17.91 Paypal or $17.00 check/mo.
1851 large cent, details of AU58 or Unc., with a little faded red on the reverse. I think this coin came with a Grellman card net grading it to AU50, but I can't find the card. The obverse features an area that was perhaps overzealously brushed with a camel hair brush, leaving a slight disturbance in front of the forehead (not badly hairlined or anything, looks like the photo). There is a rough/wavy area on Liberty's neck that I think is due to die rust, but I am not sure. It could conceivably be some kind of post-mint damage. There is a dark spot on top of this area, and a smaller one in the field. A miniscule nick on Liberty's chin. Not a perfect coin, but an awful lot of detail for the money. I paid $125 for this coin several years ago before these went up in value, but this is a common date that is hard to sell. $102.29 by Paypal or $99.00 by check/mo.
1854 large cent, VF detail or so, but areas of environmental damage on obverse. Some darkish stains and brick red surface discoloration. In its defense, it is a totally original 19th century coin that hasn't been cleaned or messed with. $17.88 Paypal or $17.00 check/mo.
1856 large cent, slanted 5. At a glance, a sharp AU50 coin with choice color. However, a dull, toned-over scratch on Liberty's chin and a rather heavy rim bump at 9:00 on the obverse. Priced to sell to someone who wants a lot of detail for very little money.
$29.20 Paypal or $28.00 check/mo.
1830 Capped Bust half dime. Totally original, crusted-over baby bustie in VF30 or so. I will leave the attribution to the new owner, though I guarantee it is no better than an R3. There are four or five fairly decent-sized scratches under the toning on the cheek, unfortunately, which just wreck the value of an otherwise crust-worthy coin. The scratches are not that noticeable at first, thanks to the fact that the toning covers them, but they are there. I paid $44 for this coin 4 years ago. $45.66 Paypal or $44.00 check/mo.
1842-o half dime. Key date with full LIBERTY, but severely corroded. Make an offer.
1847 Seated dime. F-VF or so, having most of its original toning, with faint evidence of an old cleaning near the date. The cleaning in minor in nature and would be overlooked by some people. A nice looking example of a slightly better Seated dime. $60.07 Paypal or $58.00 check/mo.
1867-S Seated dime. Bought from Brian Greer a few years back. He net graded it VF35. I grade it XF details, net VF30. This coin makes a strong impression at first, but it has several small detractions that must be considered in pricing it. There are two small nicks on Liberty's arm, one of which is heavy enough to bother me. Four miniscule pin-marks in Liberty's knee area. A few tiny ticks on the reverse, and some toned-over rim scrapes. Some slightly darker toning around the rim on both sides. Not a perfect coin, but how often do you see an 1867-s dime offered that still has the veins in the leaves on the reverse? This coin is worth a strong price for the detail alone. Check out the Heritage auction archives- this coin is seldom offered for sale in any grade.
$309.09 Paypal or $300.00 check/mo.
1872 Seated dime. XF45 or so with decent average surfaces.
$55.98 Paypal or $54.00 check/mo.
1873-p No Arrows Seated dime. Fine or so, with a faint wipe in the obverse field. Nearly all of the original patina remains. A good looking coin for the money. $39.49 Paypal or $38.00 check/mo.
1875-S Seated dime. AU details, dipped long ago and now lightly retoning. Not a hairlined or polished coin. Good luster. Some minor scuffing in the fields, typical of the AU grade range.
$77.59 Paypal or $75.00 check/mo.
1886-P Seated dime. A nice original VF30 coin, but there is a shallow scrape on the right side of D in dime, which has partly flattened that letter. Not visible in photo and hard to see in person, but it's there. Bargain priced.
$14.79 Paypal or $14.00 check/mo.
1834 Bust half, PCGS AU50. Basically, this is a flashy, lustrous AU58 bust half that was lightly cleaned. It has obviously been dipped, due to the lack of toning, and there are a few very light hairlines criss-crossing in the obverse fields. Not a coin for the lover of dark toning, but this coin has tons of luster and flash, and a great strike. My price is based upon recent auction records at Heritage for PCGS coins, as the PCGS price guide does not list coins between XF40 and AU55 (jumps $175 to $750).
$ 355.42 Paypal or $345.00 check/mo.
Note: this is out with a customer, but coming back.
1838 Capped Bust, Reeded Edge half. MS60 or so (uncertified). A sharp and lightly toned example with Unc. details. There are just a couple of wispy hairlines from Liberty's jaw into the field, which I was able to show in the photo. The toning is somewhat freckled, but not unnatractive; probably dipped at one time. A little bit of russet rim toning starting on the reverse. A few small nicks on Liberty's neck, and two very tiny ones below the date on the rim (not a rim bump). Lots of luster on both sides. I am tempted to send this to PCGS and try to get it into an AU58 or MS61 holder, but I have a feeling they will bag it for the couple of faint hairlines on the front. More photos available upon request.
$ 592.12 Paypal or 575.00 check/mo.
1842 Seated half dollar, original gray tone, VG10 detail. The coin shows some pink/purple sheen under the toning when tilted- attractive. It does have several rim nicks and two small pin-marks on the back (see photos). I just bought this from Rich Uhrich just 2 months ago for $45, but my Seated half set is mostly XF-AU and it doesn't look right in there. 1840's Seated coins are getting really difficult to locate, especially ones that have not been cleaned.
$ 41.63 Paypal or $42.00 check/mo.
1879-o Morgan dollar. An AU coin, but dipped to death, with hazy obverse scum over once-prooflike fields, and just butt ugly eye appeal. Light cheek hairlines, unmistakable signature of an old-time baking soda whiz-down, draw your eye magically to the northwest corner, where a rim ding erases any thoughts you may have entertained regarding selling this coin as anything other than a junk Morgan. Please take it.
$ 17.91 Paypal or $17.00 check/mo.
ON HOLD 1808 large cent, the "12 stars" variety with star #1 obliterated by die swell. This coin has at least VG detail, but there are numerous ticks and scuffs, and some rather ugly rusty discoloration in places. The large area of die swell has obliterated the lettering at the upper left of the reverse. A rim nick by UN of UNITED. Not pretty, but most classic head cents have even worse damage than this. Priced to sell. $62.16 Paypal or $60.00 check/mo. ON HOLD
ON HOLD 1817 "15 stars" large cent. The only Coronet Cent of any year with 15 stars around the obverse rim! This example is a Fine or so for detail, with a small but sharp rim nick at the upper obverse rim. The color is nice light tan overall, but there are some small patches of darker toning and some light porosity in a few areas. A couple of tiny nicks right on the edge of the coin. Not a choice coin, but these get very expensive in higher grades.
$61.10 Paypal or $59.00 check/mo. ON HOLD
SOLD 1835 large cent, Newcomb1, ANACS AU55. This is the "head of 1834" variety with the large 8 and stars, a Redbook variety that took me a long time to find in decent condition. Ironically, I somehow now own four of them, all nice examples, so I am selling two. This coin is sharply impressed, with rich chocolate surfaces, average+ quality for the grade level. The obverse has just a few faint scuffs from circulation, which break the luster just a bit. The reverse has half of the original mint luster and impeccable satin surfaces. I believe there is a faint double profile on the obverse, though it is not dramatic and did not show clearly in the pictures. There appears to be a tiny mint clip at 10:00 (obverse), visible as a few shallow denticles near star 4 and on the reverse in the same spot. I cannot rule out the possibility that this might be a tiny rim bump, though that usually causes raised metal, rather than sunken denticles (I have never had the coin outside the plastic to view the rim). All in all, the detractions are minimal and this is just a really nice looking example of a scarce Redbook variety.
Price $334.84 by Paypal or $325.00 check/money order. SOLD
SOLD A second 1835 N1, large 8 and stars, in original Fine condition. This coin has a few minor detractions- two shallow pits aside "A" of STATES and a small but sharp nick at the lower reverse at the right wreath stem. The surfaces are original and at least average for the grade with the normal amount of scattered nicks and scuffs under the toning. You'll wait a long time to find one of these in nice grade on Ebay, and you'll pay over PCGS price guide for it.
Price $41 check/money order. SOLD
SOLD 1849 cent #2, a dang nice original coin with no major detractions. A little white-ish crud around N of UNITED, possibly removable. I grade it VF30 by usual PCGS standards. Probably a Fair-2 by EAC standards. This date gave me a hard time when I was assembling my date/variety set of Braided Hair cents, as all of the nice ones seem to be gobbled up by copper dealers, and thus require a bank loan to purchase. $46.73 Paypal or $45.00 check/mo. SOLD
SOLD 1850 large cent, original surfaces with details of XF45 and choice color. There are a few small deposits of darkish gunk in places, but surfaces are pretty nice as large cents go. I need to take another look at this coin when I get home before I price it because I don't remember if it has any detractions, but PM if you want to reserve it or make an offer. SOLD
ON HOLD 1839 Seated half dime, WHIZZED VF to XF. This coin was harshly polished decades ago, and the obverse retoned all kinds of crazy colors while sitting in an old National Coin Album. The toning partly covers the whizzing, but it is immediately obvious that the coin was cleaned even without a loupe. At least I know it isn't AT. Why did I pay $40 for this four years ago?
$25.08 Paypal or $24.00 check/mo.
ON HOLD
ON HOLD 1856-O Seated dime. XF details. Dipped long ago and partly retoned. Not a hairlined or whizzed coin, though. Not bad looking. $49.78 Paypal or $48.00 check/mo. ON HOLD
ON HOLD 1861-S dime. G-VG detail. Cleaned long ago and now mostly retoned in brownish hue. Reverse weakness at center. A few very light scratches as seen in the photo. Not a very attractive example, but this date virtually never appears for sale on ebay or at shows! $61.10 Paypal or $59.00 check/mo.
ON HOLD
ON HOLD 1902-S dime. AU55 detail and luster, but retoned rather darkly after having been dipped long ago. Some darker toning in Liberty's hair that didn't show up in scans. Not a hairlined or polished coin, but some scuffing in fields from circulation. Under the word DIME, there is some faint scratching; otherwise this coin might have been able to grade at PCGS (but it won't). This was part of that absolutely incredible Barber dime set I bought two years ago, which is currently #6 in the PCGS Registry and would be higher if the P-mints weren't mostly proofs. I replaced this coin with a PCGS MS63, which took a lot of legwork to find. A tough and underrated Barber dime in high grade.
$102.29 Paypal or $99.00 check/mo. ON HOLD
SOLD 1809 Bust half, F15 or VF20, with pretty toning. The coin has nice, smooth surfaces, with few distractions. It might grade higher if not for a mushy strike on the eagle's head. The toning is deep grey, with hints of gold, green, and other colors. Plain edge. I love this coin and would keep it if I had not recently upgraded to an AU50 example of this date.
$138.33 Paypal or $135.00 check/mo. ON HOLD
SOLD 1821 Half dollar, O-107 R3. VF+ detail, with really pretty album toning around the rims on both sides. Not a hairlined or wiped coin. A few small dark spots, and a couple of scuffs in front of Liberty's face keep this from being a super PQ coin, but you have to love the toning on this example. The couple of contact marks in front of the face are more obvious when the coin is rotated under a lamp, but I doubt they are bad enough to keep this coin from slabbing at PCGS, if thatis your intention. This is another coin where I have a higher grade 1821 O-107, or I wouldn't sell it.
$ 154.77 Paypal or $150.00 check/mo. ON HOLD
ON HOLD1822 Bust half, details of XF45 and retaining most of its original patina. However, the whole coin has been very lightly wiped, leaving faint hairlines under the toning. I bought this raw off ebay and got hosed because the seller was dishonest, and I had to outbid 24 other people who thought it was an original coin with a shot at AU50 (and that's your typical day on ebay). Would be a $250 coin easily in a PCGS XF45 holder. However, I will discount it here for the light hairlines because I don't think it will slab.
$ 165.06 Paypal or $160.00 check/mo. ON HOLD
SOLD 1847-p Seated half dollar, an underrated "sleeper" date in the series. NGC certified AU55, but the coin is really a filthy, crusty, original AU50. Great strike with full head detail and feather detail. Medium gray tone, with the only distraction being a light "coffee stain" on Liberty's gown. These brownish stains often appear on truly original Seated and Bust coins (which are a vanishing species). The right obverse field has some chatter and scuffing under the tone, but nothing major. Purchased from Brian Greer a while back, and I have barely marked it up. You will like this coin as an original AU50. Do a quick search for "1847" in the Seated half category on ebay, and tell me how many P-mints come up. There are zero for sale on there as I list this- not even a beat-up, damaged coin or a cleaned one. Heritage has sold only 17 NGC and PCGS coins in all grades since 1993. Someone has to raise the price guide on the 1847-p, 1848-p, and 1849-p halves, IMHO.
$ 267.77 Paypal or $260 check/mo. SOLD
SOLD 1861-S Seated half, totally original VF30, a slightly better date, Civil War date, and representative of the old-time Seated coins with the huge "S" (I love those). The color of the coin is choice, and aside from one contact mark on Liberty's neck, it has really clean surfaces. There is a heavy dark spot on Liberty's wrist, and another small one above her head. Truly original circulated coins from the 19th century frequently have some dark flecks like this, and I believe that overzealous attempts to remove these dark spots are a major reason you see so many cleaned Seated coins on ebay and at shows. I'll take the original coin with the spots, thanks. But I will knock a few dollars off the price of this one.
$ 84.79 Paypal or $82.00 check/mo. SOLD
SOLD 1869-P Seated half VG-10. They don't get any more original or problem-free at this grade level. I have an Au55 for this date, so someone else can enjoy this coin.
$ 41.58 Paypal or $40.00 check/mo. SOLD
ON HOLD 1851-O 3-cent silver Details of Fine or so, with dark and somewhat uneven toning. The usual number of circulation nicks, but no individually detracting scratches or hits. The eye appeal is just "OK" overall. Priced accordingly. The only New Orleans mint 3-center, and a scarce date to boot! $34.34 Paypal or $33 check/mo. ON HOLD
ON HOLD
Key date 1864 3-cent silver. One of the key dates in the Three-Cent silver series, the 1864 has a pitiful mintage of just 12,470 business strikes. I believe that most if not all of the known examples are actually proofs, however (and just 470 of those were struck). When you consider that every person who collects Civil War era coins (and there are a lot of these collectors) needs this coin to complete the 3-cent silvers, it seems like this issue might be undervalued.
This particular coin appears to be a circulated proof or proof-like business strike. It grades AU50 or so for detail, and the toning is exactly what you'd hope to find on a silver coin of the era. It is lightly to moderately toned, mostly gray-brown, but with flecks of color here and there. The surfaces are faintly reflective. No hairlining or cleaning to speak of. There are some detractions, unfortunately- most notably, a heavy ding to the left of the III; another lighter ding on the left side of the star on the opposite side (a little worse than image shows, perhaps); a tiny dig through the final "S" of STATES; and a couple of truly tiny rim nicks. Keep in mind that this is a very small coin, so these dings are actually quite small in person. The coin is not bent. I think the mark to the left of the III is bad enough that PCGS would not holder this coin, though I did not try it. This is probably among the lowest priced 1864 Three Cent silvers you are ever going to see offered for sale, and it's got nice eye appeal despite a couple of flaws.
$334.87 Paypal or $325 check/mo. ON HOLD
[ON HOLD] 1818/7 overdate bust half, small 8. Detail of XF45 or so. Perhaps retoned naturally after a faint old cleaning, but no hairlines or wiping as far as I can tell. Now a light gray with speckled areas of color. The only flaw is a small but sharp rim nick at 1:00 on the obverse. I think this might be able to slab at PCGS, unless they are bothered by the small rim nick. This is another coin that I love, but I have a duplicate example that is choice, so time to pass this on to someone else.

1839 Head of 1838 large cent. Details of at lest VG. Not as common as 1837 or 1838 cents by any means. This is a decent average coin for the grade with no major distractions. The strike is weak and mushy in the lettering.

$ 355.42 Paypal or $345.00 check/mo.

$ 154.77 Paypal or $150.00 check/mo. ON HOLD

$ 267.77 Paypal or $260 check/mo. SOLD
$ 84.79 Paypal or $82.00 check/mo. SOLD
SOLD 1869-P Seated half VG-10. They don't get any more original or problem-free at this grade level. I have an Au55 for this date, so someone else can enjoy this coin.
