Old Coin ID

Can anyone identify this old coin? Its bronze or copper, slightly larger than a U.S. Cent. Has three Fleur De Leys on obverss and and on reverse has a Cross with a Fleur on each tip, so maybe France. Date and denomination?

That is a neat old coin! I'm sorry I can't help ID it.

  • Undoubtedly a French provencial tournois or double tournois. One I've never seen before though-- I'm guessing it dates in the 1500's.
  • Definately French but I don't think it's a royal issue as the inscription seems "wrong". Either this is a regional issue or it's some kind of token. I believe it's from the 1600s so perhaps someone with a 17th century Krause can help.

If the legends "don't match", then it's probably a jeton. How large is it?

Sounds a bit small for a jeton; they were normally "quarter-sized" or so. Sounds like it might be a coin after all. Let's see...

Obverse (cross side) reads "+LVDO FRAN. REGNIQ NEA. PR"

Reverse (shield side) reads "POPVL COM MOD??AS".

Searching CoinArchives for the obverse text, I find very good matches for Naples, under the rule of King Louis XII of France (1501-1504), like this silver carlino. So it sounds like you've got a copper coin from this time and place.
