What does G have to do with DAISUKE MATSUZAKA BOSTON RED SOX?

What does G have to do with DAISUKE MATSUZAKA BOSTON RED SOX?
Am I missing something or could the G be a error rookie card, like the 1990 Topps #414 Frank Thomas error? There is another G on Ebay, will be interesting to see how one does without the BUY IT NOW OPTION. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=270236299578

While waiting to see what Upper Deck does with my redemption on this card, I picked this one off of Ebay. Most knows the redemption story but I'll recap it. Upper Deck first stated Inventory depleted. Please contact customer service for exchange. 1-800-873-7332 and then switched it to Athlete committed to signing soon, please be patient, and they also sent a email saying allow 12-16 weeks. So to be on the safe side I purchased this one off Ebay. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=270235471166

Thanks, Mike

There was one like this on here somewhere that showed the card with a "R". That sure is not in his name either!!

They also made those using "nicknames" I would think the G stood got "Gyro"

    just a guess though

I'm just not seeing the 'G' you are referring to. Where is it?
Just glad to be here with everyone.

Saw and R too! What a joke!

Gyro is right, they use and spell out nicknames too. In football most of the time they spell out "rookie".

So are you getting a Dice K auto as a replacment?

The big red letter in the card that he autographed, unless it is #6 which would defeat the purpose of the card being called "BY THE LETTER"

I don't understand these cards at all. So they're not auto'd pieces from game worn jerseys, or even jerseys at all; they're just auto'd pieces of fabric patches with no real significance? They don't even present well. They might as well get them to autograph pieces of cut up fabric from shirts bought at the Salvation Army.

These have been all the rage for years now, or so the companies think. Like all of UD "better" ideas, this one actually came from
Donruss. Their idea was to actually use the nameplate letters of a game used jersey and have the player sign each one making them
in reality all 1/1's. So Ben Roethlisberger has a 13 of them and Warrick Dunn had only 4. You can only imagine that player collectors
went wild for these and the ultimate goal was to spell out the players name. Well as you can imagine with only 4 or 5 or 10 of them
in circulation that would of been very hard if not impossible.

UD went with fake patches maybe 5 or 6 years ago. They actually would make a whole product out of these. Many of them were autographed,
and while the patches were really nice to look at, they were just manufactored patches. They cost little to nothing to produce...compared
to ripping them off the backs of Jerry Rice and Dan Marino!

UD is now ALL "fake" patches now. EVen in products that cost 300 bucks a pack! I actually own a letter from a Leon Washington jersey
it is from Leaf Certified and it is very nice. These UD ones are not game used.

Interesting . . . I wonder what they would do in the case of the NY Yankees though, being they do not wear their names on their jerseys ?

Gonna hafta look into that, I have never pulled any of those cards .

If they're not pieces of the game used jerseys what a waste that is .

They might as well be as Lee said .

Hmmm, could it be a piece of his jersey written in Japanese /

I'm completely lost here . . . as usual image

Not sure the hobby can take much more of this.

Im not sure that Donruss has ever done the letterman with baseball. Mostly with football. As far as the fake patches that UD
puts out, the Yankees have name plates just like any other team, even though on real jersey cards they don't use them. Ill
do some research on the Yankee Letterman.

    Kevin

PS I have never seen Japaneese letters...but they might be out there.

I'm not sure if Japanese even have letters either , I think they might be whole word symbols they use, But I have no idea
  • duh.

the G is from Godzilla..... Dice-K's greatest enemy. that...and all the WALKS he gives up

these letters are the rage on the beckett boards...it seems everyone has them in their SIG....

another example of manufactured scarcity from the card companies....JUNK

rather have a clean auto instead of smudged auto that fades more very year!
  • The R was possibly from Red Sox on the Jersey, The G though is a good question
