Old Coin ID

Can anyone identify this old coin. I believe that it is silver, about size of a U.S. Dime, & thin. Possibly German/Italian States?. Its dark and worn so hard to see much detail.

Looks like a medieval French Denier, but the photo is not clear enough for me to tell you more.

Yep, it's a French penny (denier), or reasonable imitation, from sometime around the 1200's. Many of the smaller states surrounding France copied the design.

Here's an example from Poitou that looks similar to yours, except the writing on yours appears to be different. I think the "crown side" says something like "DENARENCIA" and the "cross side" (this pic is upside down) says something like "+RI...AChTARDR" on the other.

Some clearer photos or scans might allow a more positive ID.

  • Not sure how Sap can read any part of these legends from the pics, I can barely read them in the book image

So, based on Sap's legends, I think it might be....on the crown(actually a temple) side, DE CLARENCIA. On the cross side, PH? S RACHTAR DR.

I know nothing about these, but my book says, Chatel type, Denier Tournois, Princes of Achaea, Glarentza(Clarencia?) and Corinth Mints. Philip of Taranto 1306-1313.

  • Definately the "Small" or Short Cross Variety.........Try to google it for image's.
