1971 Topps Thuman Munson SGC 88

Is it me? Or does the bidding on this 1971 Topps Thurman Munson SGC 88 reflect the belief that it would crossover to a PSA 8 or (holy smokes) a PSA 9? $565.55 with an hour and a half to go. I'm curious as to the final bid.

It'd be darn close. I'm surprised it's not a 92. It must be chipping because SGC cards with centering like that are usually 92/96's unless they have another problem.

SGC is very tough on 62's, 71's, and 75's

The last couple of PSA 8s I watched, actually had nicer edges... I think. They sure looked good for 8s.

I'd sure love to see one in a 9 holder.

I don't look at alot of SGC cards but the gasket is cut WITHOUT the arrowhead-like corners - so there's no space around the corners.

The black on black doesn't do the card any justice IMO - but the corners look scary good for an 8?

    PSA 8.5? Why not.

None are mine (gee wouldn't that be nice), but here's three (3) examples of what a 1971 Topps Thurman Munson PSA 9 looks like. Tough call, but my favorite might be the 3rd one, but it is difficult to tell with the clear case scan. Anyone with access to the POP please note how many PSA 9s are out there?

I'm tempted to go the 6's route myself but it seems the difference in quality b/t 6's and 7's is greater than that of 7's vs 8's. But it'll still be awhile before I can get my own 1971 set started so I still got plenty of time to weigh my options.

Holy smokes! The 1971 Topps Thurman Munson SGC 88 went for $997.43.

I don't think any PSA 8 is worth that. If that SGC 88 crosses over to a PSA 8.5, then I could see it eclipsing $1,000.00.

P.S. And I just noticed that the high bidder is mets-71. Those who know, know that mets-71 rarely loses any auctions. I suspect his max bid was well over $1,000.00.

I have a 7...and I think for a 71 Munson, its the best value for your money. Actually its an SGC 84 and its SWEET

The left to right boarders on the SGC card look short to me. Especially when compared to the PSA scans. The boarders on the SGC look like they are the same size as the white pre-boarder, the boarders on the PSA 9 are larger than the white pre-boarder......not saying that it's trimmed but compare them yourself:

I know of the seller (consignmints) pretty well and know that they have a good customer base and repeat customer following which probably helped them achieve the final sales value for that card.

The seller has always had a nice assortment of high quality (mainly vintage) cards on auction at all times throughout the years.

From my past and recent experience with baseball crossovers from SGC BVG, BCCG and GAI to PSA I have done nothing short of horrible and often stipulate on my submission forms the minimum grade I will accept on the crossover request because of my poor history in buying cards which originated from another grading company.

SGC is no doubt the best of the other grading companies when it comes to vintage cards and grade accurately.

I hate to say it but, I will. I believe their is a reliuctancy on the part of PSA to crossover cards equally and often downgrade a card for one reason or another.

Personally I would buy a PSA graded card if that is what I wanted otherwise I wouldnt buy it with the hopes of crossing it over.

Big time gamble for the price. I think it looks like an 8 but this card is going to be very scrutinized when it comes in. I was actually going to say sheet cut when I first saw it.

Agree with gameusedhoop, those side borders just do not look right in size compared with with the PSA ones.

The person who won this card got a good price for an 8.

If you do a little research on the buyer, you'll see that he has no intention of ever crossing it over. The buyer, in every sense of the word, is a true collector.

If there are 86 cards in PSA with NQ's then this card is highly over valued. I think there should only be extreme premiums placed on cards with pops less than 50 and that is only if it is a player that is collectible or from a highly collectible set.
