EAC 2008 is now history - another great gathering of dedicate numismatists

Wed.
Arrived at host hotel -Sheraton Grand DFW abot 1:30 PM - not much action. Saw a few folks, Tett and Ed Jasper (convention chair). As afternoon drifted on, suspects started to arrive. First saw Half cent collectors Ray Rouse and the Greg Heim - exchanged pleasantries and had a nice discussion with Greg after figuring out who he was - he has lost 95 pounds. Wed. night had a snack in the pub - saw some of the Boyz of 94 - Boka, Niewetter, etc.

Thurs.
The real start of festivities -- setup display early PM - mine was the US Coins of 1816. We were missing lights but they were being used for Hlaf and large Cent happenings in the evening. After setup got an early look at reynolds, Bird, and CVM stuff -- astounding as usual. Thurs. evening was the reception sponsore dby Heritage - set ddown dinner with libations - later the EAC Board has nixed the corporate sponsorship. Reception was quite nice and set wit Rod Widok and Ray Rouse along with Greg Heim (we must attract). All but Greg had spouses there. We then went to the Happenings and saw some truly awesome coins -- MS67 Bn 1797 HC among many more. A nice night.

Fri.
The serious part of the convention begins. I hit all the tables looking for re-punched Late Dates, my current effort. I find one at Reynolds table, a fellow named Wieckel from Florida (as I recall), and Craig Hamling's table. Bird has nothing since Central States but do trade a '96 S109 to ugrade my collection. I then go pay Shawn Yancey for a '24 N1 I got last week from a special registry set he has - I put mine on consignment with Reynolds. It is lunch and my old college bunky and his wife whom we went to high school with in Illinois arrive. We show them the bourse - they cannot believe what we pay for hunks of copper, get caught up on news, and then go to dinner at a nice Texas Steak House.

Sat.
We meet ot the old friends for breakfast and they soon depart - we both vow not to wait another 30 years since we will be dead by then. The wife hit the city tour and I go back to bourse and the educational seminars which are always outstanding. In the meantime I get the idea to buy a run of UNC Late Date Half Cents but finally decide against it.
By now have to go to early dinner to get back for auction. As usual the auction is bllody and i overbid on about half the items - I win 4 of 5 - not bad but overpay badly on one of the Half Cents. The auction hammers about half a million which is big to EAC as it is there principal money maker. I leave about 11:30 PM as am bushed and my lots are done.

Sun.
Annual EAC meeting - pretty uneventful until announce the discontinuance of reception corporate sponsorship -- lots of questions and will be interesting next year in Cincy. special tribute to John Wright who has served as EAC treasurer for 37 years, a true giant of the hobby and Jack Robinson announces a new CQR in Sep. We left and took a ride out of town as I had been pretty cooped up and had a rental car with a full tank of gas -- we ate in a local hot spot in Decatur Texas. We got back about 2PM and only three dealers left - tore down the exhibit, caught up on email and hit the pub. A

Thanks for the great report! Sounds like you had a great time! What was the rationale for discontinuing the corporate sponsorship of the reception?

For continuing - everyone likes it, auction houses canbnot buy a consignment for a hunk of roast beef

for discontinuing - sit down dinners not codcive to socializing, want no appearance of "getting in bed" with auction houses, protect independence

One suggestion from floor was - let corporations sponsor but only a few tables for those who cannot stand - board has voted - now will see what happens at Cincy as there is a big disparity between corporate and club $$$$
