Buyer disagreeing with PSA wants refund

I sold a PSA 7 1980 Bird/Magic rookie about 2 weeks ago and the seller is upset and states the card is "a mess". He is complaining about print spots. I gave a good scan and he complains that I should have had a better scan. My auction clearly states that there are no returns on graded cards. What would you do as a seller? This man disagrees with PSA and wants me to give him a refund. He says he is a 50 year collector so I am wondering whether he understands the grading of PSA. I offered him a refund since the buyer is supposed to be always correct. Is there any way I can recoup my losses from ebay for the listing fee and the juice? I explained to the buyer that 95% of people would not refund such a purchase because as a buyer you are paying for the said condition PSA has deemed the card. This is a first for me in 10 years on ebay so I guess I shouldn't complain too much.

    No refund. Scan + PSA gives enough to go on.

    you should be able to get your fvf's back from ebay

    I would also let him know that you will be adding him to your blocked bidder list..

    I just had my first graded card return in my 10 years of collecting graded cards just a few weeks ago. This was an off ebay sale to a friend, a $400 card that had a tiny pinhole. It could be clearly seen in the scan, but he said he missed it. I didn't want to leave the guy with a card he's unhappy with. Even if it was an ebay stranger, I would have most likely allowed the return for the same reason. I also told him maybe he should send a scan to Joe O. and ask what the standards are on PSA grading of pinholes. (This was a PSA 8).

    If the buyer comes across as a good guy and not a butthole about it, I would most certainly honor the request.

    If this is your auction it doesn't have any return policy listed at all, and has the typical ebay reduced-quality scan. You described it as being better than a 7, that it should be regraded. The guy doesn't seem like a constant complainer based on his feedback left.

    You can get the FVF fees back if you file an unpaid item dispute and click on mutually agreed not to complete. You get FVF fees back but not listing fees.

    It's worth using photobucket to host your ebay pics. You've had some real nice cards lately (ryan, mays) and the big scans help people spend more money. Just put the scan in your description, if you need help to do it PM me and I'll show you how.

    I would, too. I'd make the guy happy, and if I didn't want to deal with him again, I'd block him from bidding.

    My policy has been to take returns, but only a few customers over the years have done so. The ones I can think of that have returned cards have remained customers. Surprisingly, nobody has abused the policy and returned cards repeatedly.

    If you relist the item and it sells, you also get your listing fees returned on the relist.

    I would refund him, for a couple reasons...one if it had print spots, and you didnt indicate that in the auction, plus you said it should be higher grade if resubmitted.

    Dont refund his shipping, he will still be out shipping both directions.

    Lastly, if you relist it like this auction, without the extra description, you will probably get close to what he paid or more anyway....

    So I will give him the refund. I actually think the card should have been an 8. I pulled it out of a pack this summer and it looks like an 8 to me. I may get it regraded.

    He did not, but who is to say it wouldn't until it is actually resubmitted?

    Instead of basing my opinions on hofautos' re-write of the auction I checked for myself, and here is what was actually written in the auction: "I thought it would at least receive and 8 but it did not." Then after a sentence about shipping terms, he states "This card has 4 sharp corners and should be regraded."

    The seller is not guaranteeing anything, just hyping (maybe over-hyping) his card like MANY sellers on eBay do. That being said, do I feel there should have been a larger scan, yes.

    Jim, im sure that is what he meant, but he never actually says the words (like hofautos said he did), and I agree with you 100% about the poor scan in the auction.

    He did infer should be higher grade if resubmitted.


    To me - the following two statements does infer that it could be resubmitted for possibly an 8, and at minimum, it infers that seller believed that it is a high grade 7 or low grade 8, which seller even repeats above. I know if i read the below two statements, and then got a card with a lot of print spots, i would be a little upset, especially if they were not mentioned or at least visible in scan.

    "I thought it would at least receive and 8 but it did not." PLUS "This card has 4 sharp corners and should be regraded."

    Just give him the refund. You also might want to lower your $5 shipping fee.

    Nevermind all this Bird/Magic stuff anyway. Let's go buy some Berkmans and break out all our Maddux cards.

    I don't think the seller did anything wrong. He gave the guy a refund, I would say 99 out of 100 buyers would have been happy. If a buyer wants a 9, then don't buy my 7 and complain its not a 9.

    actually, if the scan was small, i would ask the seller for a larger scan, as i typically do....but the buyer didnt in this case, so I would rely on the seller's description...

    I agree good seller for sure, but I think he'll get better money and less chance of this happening again with better scans.

    I have been using Auctiva auction assistant and it has been pretty helpful. It is faster and easier to upload photos than with photobucket and it puts the typical ebay size scan in the listing, but they can click to supersize it in a new window. It also gives you the scrolling window of your other listings. It is free and worth every penny.

    Sorry, but I don't see why a 50 year collector fell in love with your card and bid on it. I am willing to bet that when he got the card he recognized that it is OC....it wasn't print spots..trust me. No refund. Runner up on bidding has over 5000 feedback and was willing to pay $135.69...3rd place bidder..$135.54...winner sniped and didn't check it out properly.
    I regretfully made that mistake in buying a very sweet raw 1963 Rose after asking and receiving multiple close up scans of corners, and surface. After getting assurances of the perfect corners and surface....I pulled the trigger. When I got the card, my heart sank...I went back to the scans to verify it was the same card...how in the world did I ignore the crappy centerring?? I did not ask for a refund...I just obsessed on the chance that it was a 9...and shut my brain off. My mistake, not the seller's

    Sadly, self-hosting photos NOW earns sellers points towards the punishment package in Best-Match.

    With that L/R centering I don't see an 8 in that cards future.
