Case Altered

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&Item=350058340531&Category=55928&_trksid=p3907.m29

This case and card have been altered. There is super glue in the top left and the case has cracks all the way around. I bought this card and when I received it noticed the case had been opened and the original Henderson Rookie had been removed. The card in the case has been trimmed. Look below the banner on the left side there is a bump where they slipped and on the right side there is a nick. I notified the seller and he refunded my money but then he relisted the card. This guy has 100% rating and is very nice. I guess he doesnt agree with my observation but I am 100% sure it has been altered.

I agree. But I dont want some innocent unknowing person to end up with a card that is worthless.

    My first thought exactly.

I guess I feel that a "crusade" should be mounted against fraud, but in this case I would let it go. If the seller has 100% feedback, it is unlikely that he actually performed this alteration (but could be the case I suppose). I would be more inclined to do what I could if this was a high value vintage card. It's sort of like my thoughts on PSA mislabels. Ok fine, they made a mistake, nothing to complain about since they will fix it and I would rather them spend the time to spot fakes and alterations than get their flips correct 100% of the time. Or it's nothing like that at all, lol, man I'm glad its Friday. image

    Yikes!!!!!!!!

MANY sellers simply do not trust folks who raise an alarm about
    a problem listing. I do; when I get a heads-up, I pull the listing
and get to the bottom of the issue.

Relisting a problem item is not good. At the very least, the slab
    has some pretty obvious issues.

He relisted the card the very day he received it back in the mail. I understand people can pick up altered cases by accident and try to sell them not knowing the item was altered and Im not accusing this dealer of anything but poor judgement.

    Good Day,
Maybe if somebody else E-Mailed him about the concerns, he might re-think the sale?

If the guy was acting in good faith, it seems he would have
listened to the OP. The slab is, obviously, at least, "damaged."

I hope about half of ALL EBAY sellers get runoff. (I hope the
bad buyers end up in prison.)

Not a lot of money to be made in the fraudulent Rickey Henderson SGC 88 market.

    True.

Im not saying he is trying to make money by selling altered cards and cases. What I am trying to accomplish is keeping integrity in the graded card business or should I say allowing someone to get what they trust is a third parties true opinion of a card. Altered cases hurt both the buyer and the grading company's name that is attached to the flip.

I really doubt that the case has been compromised. chaz

Believe me scans can fool you especially when they have a back drop like this card(gray mortar). I've been collecting since 1985 and remitted my first card to PSA in 1992 so Ive seen a few cases. But I could be wrong (seriously doubt it). I took a 20x loop and looked at the corner closely to see the glue bubbles along with the stress fractures on the sides. The card also has a bump on the side below the yellow banner, hard to see unless you go to the auction and click on the card.

I would figure the grading companies would be the one's looking out for integrity. Good luck on your crusade.

The Seller just ended the auction.

Thanks for the help. The seller is now wanting me to tell everyone he bought the card that way and never altered the card or case. I believe him and never accused him of altering the card or case it would be an easy thing to miss when buying a large collection.

I've cracked open alot of SGC cases and they are tamper proof. That means that there is no way you are getting to get in there without breaking the case wide open. It's design is similar to Beckett where one plastic piece "fits" inside another. So I don't agree that the case has been opened. chaz

Chaz, what if you cracked 2 or 3 cases in order to get one good case. Do you think that is possible? Also is the sgc sticker on the inside or outside of the case?

Nope. I don't believe it can be done. The holder you show looks fine. chaz
